I just bought the Epson ET-4850. I previously had the ET-4550 (7+years old) and I have a bunch - full bottles - of ink of 664 and 774. The associate at the store I purchased the printer from said that if I could get the ink in the well, it would work fine because basically the only difference was the nozzles. I did a little digging and I'm finding mixed reviews. Is this true? I don't want to ruin my brand-new printer.

I wouldn't see a problem swapping the inks - the CMY 664 and the 102 inks are dye inks, the 774 and 102 black are pigment inks, the inks are not different - the bottles - the keyed bottle heads are different.

The new printer calls for a 502. Does that make a difference?

That's most likely just a different region code - where are you located ?

The 502 inks in your region are actually Claria inks as per the description by Epson, these are the Epson premium inks - bottled in this case, and not in cartridges as otherwise used in the Epson photo printers.

I never got into problems when swapping Epson dye inks between different printers.

How do I find out if both the 502 and the 664/774 are the same type of ink? dye vs pigment is what I've been seeing a lot. I don't want to damage my printer pad or clog any hoses. I sent enough money. :)

Epson won't tell you - they expect you to use that ink which they asigned to be used with a particular printer. But what's the problem - the 502 ink is classified by Epson as a Claria ink which is the premium line of Epson dye inks.

How do I find out if the old inks (newly purchased within the last 2 years) are not going to reuine my new printer?
