Epson has introduced a range of photo printers, which is very similar to Canon approach: 1x pigment black for text printing + 4 (cyan, magenta, yellow, photo black) Claria dye ink for photo printing. Previous Claria photographic ink printers uses a CcMmYk 6-colour printing system, but because the variable droplet technology of Epson, each channel is able to produce 5 different droplet size: 21, 14, 7, 3 and 1.5 pl making the usage of the lighter light cyan/magenta obsolete. Canon printers can only produce 3 different droplet sizes for the dye inks: 5, 3 and 1 pl and the photo prints are still extremely good. Now imagine the quality of not 3, but now 5 different droplet sizes.
I wish there was 1 extra colour to be incorporated in these printers: grey !!! So it would be able to produce neutral black&white prints and to increase the overall gamut of the prints as well.
