I am thinking about getting an Epson 3880 soon and naturally I am reading up as much as possible on all aspects of ownership that I can. (This can be considered a warning that other naive questions may follow. :))

My enquiry is concerned with the waste tank; Having read that it is entirely possible to reline the tank with fresh absorbent material (the use of tampons I found a nice piece of lateral thinking by the way) I was wondering about resetting the waste tank chip - and just the this chip - not all the colour tanks.

Be prepared: the resetter will cost you about $ 99.- including shipment to you. Enough for 4 new ones.....

anthony, check out inkjet republic and inkjetcarts sites for a whole slew of info regarding the 3800/3880.

I have used the Canon 9xxx printers for the last 'centrury', my most recent is the Pixma Pro 9000. However I could not ignore overwhelming praise showered on the arrival of the 3880--I wanted a format wider than 13" and longer than 23" for my pano arrays--the 3880 seemed perfect. Once I knew that good quality refill kit was available (and checked them out) I bought the 3880 and the refill kit. My cost for refilling is less than ~1/4 of OEM, ~$14. I am still running OEM inks and will switch over as they empty--no problem since I create my own profiles.
Bottom Line: this is a superb printer, I highly recommend!!

Stop worrying about the waste tank--do buy latex gloves and Lava soap--no need to get too colorful!

Thanks for all the info. I have looked at the NorthLight website previously and found Keith's descriptions very helpful.

I am certainly not going to worry about the waste tank - at least it has one: unlike my Photo 1400 which will have to have an external bottle fitted soon. The question of a waste tank, or not, appears to me to be one of the shortcomings of the soon-to-be-launched R3000.
