End of an era 3880 goes?

If Jon Cone is right, and eBay USA is right Epson are just about to do a Chrysler. Pulling the 3880 and not replacing it with a 3880 core surrounded by upgrade smarts will I predict be the tipping point for both canon and Epson to open the door to someone else. Canons Pro 1 has been a runaway best seller (not) and without the 3880 there is nothing either has that worth looking at in that range.
If this is seen as a rant, it's a rant of anguish.
