I'm reading through some posts online I'm also seeing posts about replacing PK carts with MK ink.

Get the printer first, then think about different cartridge configuration, and please disregards all the reviews and what you heard on line, (except here) this is a pigment printer and the best you can get, change nothing !..

I'm guessing the vertical banding is moire from the scanner, but just wanted to double check with all the bad luck I've been having.

I'm pretty excited though, I could pick it up today.

Alright, I got it! The seller was a really nice older gentleman who was getting rid of his after upgrading to a PRO-300. It was refreshing to finally deal with someone who wasn't trying to jerk me around.

He said I could return it if there were any problems, but it looks like he took good care of the it.

It's low on red so I just did a small test print.

Should I go with Precision Colors refills?

Congratulations on your great find, now remember this is a pigment printer with special carts, so threat it with respect, and it will reward you with great prints, if unused for a little while run a nozzle check before starting any prints..

Would you recommend Precision Color refills or sticking with OEM?

I watched a video on refilling PGI-72 cartridges and it looked pretty simple by applying ink through the discharge port. I have a scale I can measure the weight with.

I've heard since pigment prints are more indelible, it's not as much of an issue with 3rd party inks being less light fast. I plan on printing mostly for my own folio.

I have an i1Studio for profiling, although I've only used it on my monitors so far.

I needed to replace the print head in my Pro-10 a little over a year ago. After scouring the interweb, I discovered that Canon Canada sold brand new print heads. Not cheap, but less than a new printer. I believe the Pro-300 uses the same print head (with different inks). If that's the case replacement print heads will be available from Canon for a while.

As far as refilling. YES! It is as simple as applying ink to the large inkpad opening. No drilling or plugs required. You will need to pick up a chip resetter; available from Precision Colors (USA), Inkpot (Canada) or Octoink (UK). The latter of which also sells empty Canon OEM cartridges that you can refill. I have two sets of PGI-72 cartridges with PC ink. As soon as any one cartridge gets low, I replace the entire set of 10. That way, the maintenance cycle does not cause another colour to drop below the replace level. Day to day printing is with PC inks. For my gallery work I have a set of Canon OEM inks that I swap whenever needed. As the ink is directly above the print head, there is no need to flush between ink cartridge changes, as the maintenance cycle after changing inks flushes any of the previous ink through.

I use my ColorMunki Photo (older version of your i1Studio) to profile my regularly used papers. No need to profile when I am using the Canon OEM inks as I use the paper supplied profiles.

Precision Colors has just been sold and are moving their operations to the USA, so that will make it easier and less expensive for you if you are located there.

Yes Pgl-72 carts are the simplest carts in the world to refill, but you will need a redsetter for the chips, Precision colour, InkOw or Octoinkjet will be a good place to get replacement inks..
If you plan to sell your prints, then only use OEM inks..

Thanks for the tips. I was tempted to order a starter kit from Octoink with an extra set of cartridges, but I think I'm going to stick with Precision Colors because of my location. I do think Octoink's kit looks better though, I like their flush clips. I think I'll be able to achieve something similar by simply poking a hole in the clips and using a blunt tip with a syringe.

Instead of ordering an extra set of empty cartridges, I found an overstock set of PGI-72 cartridges on eBay for $100. That'll give me a runway of OEM prints I can test before I switch over to Precision Colors. I think I'll wait until after the 28th to place my order and give them time to settle in.

I'm debating on whether to purge the cartridges before refilling them. I'm thinking if I'm printing for my own personal use, and I'm willing to profile between refills, to just add PC ink to whatever is still in the cartridges. I don't know if that's is a horrible idea or not.

BTW - An update on the printhead orders. I was finally able to get in touch with an eBay rep who assured me that I'll get a full refund from the seller. I also heard back from the local vendor for the 2nd head. He was legit and sent me a return label right away.

That still leaves the set of CLI-8 cartridges I ordered. I'm trying to sell them as open box, since I only used them to run a few nozzle checks, but I don't have high hopes, so that might be a write-off.
