Hi - I tried to plug in and turn on the printer with the cover off, and I immediately received an error. Is that because the wifi is disconnected, or will I have to reassemble the printer in order to see if I have repaired my error? I was getting a 16 on/off cycle light error, and when I opened the printer, I found one of the clear discs on the gears had come off the axel and the boot that it goes into was bent. My printer took a nasty spill which caused it to quit working. Also, can you confirm that the plastic discs are just stuck to the axel and not held on by some sort of clip?

Hi samboy:

As I remember the printer worked fine with the cover off (while checking repairs).
But I made sure everything was hooked up with nothing shorting or in a place that could cause anything to bind.
As for the plastic clear discs I don't know much about them. But my sense of direction tells me they may need to be installed in the exact same place rotationally (word is spelled correctly I checked). I don't know if they are glued in anyway but I would guess that they need to be mounted in some substantial way so they won't rotate or come off. It is my WAG (guess) that they are some kind of timing or position plate that is read by laser or magnetic pulse or something like that. If what I believe is true they will need to be reinstalled in the exact position they where in from the factory. These discs may assist in giving the main board information about where the paper is along the length of the sheet. Get out a good flashlight and a magnifying glass and see if you can find any markings of any kind (on the two mating pieces) that will help you reinstall the disc in its original position. Also I would advise some kind of temporary mounting until you are sure they are in the right place. Position may be very critical for proper operation of the printer. Help me better understand the printer by posting what you learn. You should be able to find something on the internet that tells you what the 16 on/off cycle error means. Are the cycles all green, all orange or a mix of both? Are the flashes all fast blinks, slow blinks or a combination? Please post that for us when you find out.

And as you stated the printer took a nasty spill which could mean this disc problem is only one of more problems? You could have loose or broken connections, cracked circuit boards or solder joints or other broken parts.

Also I can't make it a priority right now but I do plan to take apart one of my PR 100's for some maintenance on the purge unit. I can inspect the disc positions then. I will post them.

Canon Pro-100 cabinet removal procedure​

Warning take apart your printer at your own risk. I have no idea on how to explain the difficulty level at succeeding at this work. As I do this kind of work a lot, and my chances of succeeding may be higher than most, I don't know. If this is your daily driver, think twice about doing this. I bought this printer off Ebay at a very reasonable price as a “parts only” purchase. I purchased this printer for the purpose of learning how to work on it. If a bricked it I didn't care as I have another Pro 100 that is pristine and works perfectly. The areas of concern are the following:

1. The printer is big and heavy.​
2. If any of the tabs get broken off the panels (they fall inside) you must retrieve them (they could end up someday in a moving part and brick your printer).​
3. The WIFI antenna module and ribbon cable are fragile and must be removed before removing the top cover.​
4. If you choose not to remove the control panel as I did. You must protect the wires and connectors. Make sure to support it and protect it from any type of movement damage.​
5. I believe Canon must have a special tool to aid in the releasing of the first two top panels, without this tool the work is still possible, but some cosmetic damage to the panels is almost guaranteed.​

Now there was two other reasons I took apart this printer, one was the paper feed tray did not work and I wanted see how or if a printer potty could be installed. In the end I was able to repair the feed tray, install my homemade printer potty and successfully reassemble the printer. The printer works fine now. Now that I have done this I believe it is possible to install a printer potty without disassembling the printer. I will post a how-to on this later.

Tools need to do this work:

1. #2 Philips screwdriver.
2. A plastic and metal putty knife. (about 2” (50mm) wide)
3. Needle nose pliers
4. 5/16” (8 mm) standard straight edge screwdriver.

Proceed as follows:

1. Remove right and left top panels, they basically unlock by moving them toward the back of the printer about 1/8” (2 to 3 mm) and pealing them off from the top.
2. Remove the three cosmetic corners (leave control panel in place) depress (or lift) tab locks to release and peal away from top.
3. Remove WIFI antenna module and release ribbon cable.
4. Depress tab locks to release cover and remove as needed.

This is great and I managed to get my pixma pro 10 open. I now have a bit that seemed to be causing the issue but I don’t know how it goes back on. The plastic part in the first image was detached and loose. This was a cheap 2nd hand buy. Could you advise? Many thanks

Congratulations on successfully disassembling your Pro 10 printer. I however have not owned a Pro 10 so I do not know much about this printer. But the pieces in your picture look very much like they are part of the cartridge cleaning / purge unit. There is a spring missing also. And my guess after cleaning and a close inspection with some magnification you will find something is broken? Maybe? I will upload a few pictures to help you soon. I think the solution is to find someone selling a good used purge / cleaning station maybe on eBay?

I also recommend you do at least do a blot test on the print head. If you don't get a good blot test. Clean the print head and blot test again. You may need to use a syringe to drip the right color on each print head screen to make sure there is sufficient ink in each color channel. If you can't get a good blot test and you don't know if the rest of the printer is good, you have some decisions to make. Print heads are expensive. If however you can get a purge unit very cheap or free it maybe worth tinkering with even if the print head and the rest of the printer is in unknown condition. Good luck
