I have just bought a reconned MP600 from Canon. All carts were new and unopened. I did a test page of black text. Settings were plain paper in draught (fast) mode which I understand uses the large black cart.

I was surprised to find the ink smeared when wetted. Have Canon stopped using pigmant black for the PGI-5BK cart?

Is plain paper mode you use PGI cartridge, but smearing depends on paper type and quality.

It can smear if you touch it or when wetted. It all depends on paper.

It is my understanding that Fast Draft Mode uses the dye-based CLI-8 ink cartridges and NOT the pigmented black ink PGI-5 cartridge.

Other ink usage parameters for (at least) most newer Canon IP/MP printers:

PGI-5 Pigment Black Ink is used ONLY For:
- Plain Paper Test (monochrome and grey scale)
- Envelopes
- Transparencies
- Duplex Printing On Plain Paper
- Camera Direct Printing on Plain Paper

CLI-8 Dye-Based Color Inks are used anytime color is printed and is used exclusively for:
- All Photo Paper types (including when Duplex printing)
- High Resolution Paper
- T-shirt Transfers
- CD-R's
- All Borderless Printing, on both PhotoPaper and Plain Paper

Try this to exclude any printer settings involvements (wheter or not using the PGI-5BK black):

Print out a nozzle check page (with the different colour bars and for the PGI-5BK the declining rastered bar) and put a drop of water on the rastered bar of the PGI-5Bk nozzle check area and wait a few minutes and see if it smears......

What do you see now ?

If I rub the wetted vertical bar, it smears. But if I rub the graticle it doesn't.

I tried Hobbiclors and that is the same. It seems that if the ink has soaked into the paper, all is well. But if there is a surplus of ink on the surface as there may be with the vertical bar) then it will smear.

I do all text prints in draught mode, so envelope addresses should be OK.
