canon MP830 ADF mysterious line issue

my canon MP830 has started to act up, here are the symptoms

- getting a mysterious line from top/bottom about 1/3 from left
- happens when using the ADF to SCAN or COPY
- happens both 1 or 2 sided

- does NOT happen when scanning in from the platen

i did go into service mode this AM for a printout, came out fine. tried power cycling, weird .....

any ideas ??

Dirt on the thin strip of glass to the left of the large glass will cause this problem.
