Canon MP 790 False Ink Out Signals

The printer sudden starts saying that the ink is out (BK 3E) even though it is almost full. I've tried 2 different cartridges with the same error. Is this fixable or do I have new paperweight?

Remove the cartridge (leaving the space empty) and close the cover. Does it now report the cartridge as full? If it doesn't, look for something on the bottom of the cartridge that shouldn't be there.
