Canon iP4000 Head and Purge unit out of sync.

Printer should do the following when powered-up:
a Purge unit lowers
b wiper cycles wiping head
c head cycles
d head comes to rest at the far right

Printer actually does this:
a purge unit lowers
b head moves to left 100mm (4in)
c wiper cycles to wipe head(?)
d head comes to rest at the far right

Printer prints OK but has ink splotches due to the head not having been wiped.

I have cleaned "everything" in sight and anything that moves, moves without any sign of hesitation.

How do I correct this sequence?

By cleaning the purge unit and making sure all moving parts move freely you have already done what I would have suggested, but does the printer give any error messages?
