Hello all. I have been running CISS a Canon MP280 printer an ever so often the cartridges just start to print very poor, with line an missing text. When that happen i always end up having to just replace the cartridge that bad with a fresh cartridge. Is their a way to slow that down, the black cartridge normally goes bad first after about 1000 pages. What can be done to make the cartridges last longer ?

It might be bad ink, but the problem might also be caused by the design of the cartridge. These sponged cartridges with built in print heads are very similar to the HP 56/57 type of cartridges. Unlike the individual Canon ink tanks, which use a double sponge made from two different fibrous materials, the combined cartridges use sponges made of one piece of a foam material.

Druckerchannel.de has tested refilling this type of cartridges, and found that the black cartridge lost its capacity after a few refills. Link here: http://www.druckerchannel.de/artikel.php?ID=1629&seite=9&t=lebensdauer_der_patronen or a Google translation into English: http://translate.google.dk/translat...hp?ID=1629&seite=9&t=lebensdauer_der_patronen

For some reason Google translate didn't translate the word "Druckkpfe", it means print heads.

To me it looks like the ink gradually blocked the sponge material in the Druckerchannel test. I don't know if Druckerchannel.de used dye or pigmented black ink in their test, but maybe a dye black (photo black) ink will show less tendency to clog the sponge in the black cartridge?

You can wash the cartridge, but 1000 pages... I don't know if that would help. This type of cartridges are not made for intensive/prolonged use.

To wash it you may use pharmacist's conditioning solution without the ammonia ( http://www.nifty-stuff.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=30697#p30697 ) and a device used to refill this cartridge ( http://www.allshops.ro/files/clients/16/3753/p/62/kit-refill-negru-pt-canon-pg-510pg-512-501628.jpg , http://i01.i.aliimg.com/photo/v0/342585743/PGI_510_Refill_tool.jpg )

Inject the solution into the sponge until it pools on it and leave it for 3-5 minutes, then slowly extract the solution through the nozzles. Repeat this process 3-4 times with fresh solution. When the solution comes out clear you can stop. Extract every last drop through the nozzles and refill with ink. Extract this ink and refill again with fresh ink. Now the cartridge is cleaned, refilled and ready to go.

In my experience it's not a good idea to take the sponge out of the cartridge to clean it. I tried it a couple of times and couldn't bring the cartridge to good working condition afterward.

They used pigment ink and the cartridge lost it's capacity because ink dried inside the sponge. That should not happen in a ciss setup because the sponge is not in direct contact with air.

Two good points here. According to their article Druckerchannel did not put the label back after refill. This disables the vent maze, which has the purpose of minimizing evaporation from the cartridge.

When the cartridge is attached to a ciss, then you will have no evaporation from the cartridge and then I suspect that the ink might be the cause of the problems. You did not say what brand of ink you use, but one brand that is used by many members is Image Specialists. You could try to contact the seller and ask if he has an ink set that is suitable for your cartridges and ciss use. Link here: http://www.precisioncolors.com/contact.html . You could also check out the InkTec inks used by Tudor, I think he would not use them if they didn't work well.

I am no ciss expert, but I have read that pigment inks don't work well with ciss.
