Canon Pixma? MX700? MX310? MP560?

Hi. I'm a newbie seeking advice on buying a new inkjet printer. I'm looking for a multifunction/all-in-one printer/copier/scanner for a lightly used home office. Doesn't need to be networked with anything. I won't be doing much, if any, photo printing but will do a limited amount of color printing, such as for CD jewel cases, etc. Mostly will use it for printing and copying black & white text. Needs to have an ADF. It doesn't need to be fast--a slow ppm speed is OK.

Re cartridges, a 4-cartridge system would be more than adequate. Probably a 2-cartridge system, i.e., one color cartridge and one black, would also suffice (which is what the Canon Pixma MX310 has), since I've been OK with the 2 cartridges in my Dell A920 that I'm replacing (made by Lexmark, I think).

I'm inclined toward a Canon, having read Neil's Inkjet Helper pages, but I don't need the i960 type of photo-printing excellence. I'm leaning toward the Canon Pixma MX700, which I can buy at newegg.com for a total price (shipped) of $155. I'm also considering the Canon Pixma MX310 and the Canon MP560 if I can get one on eBay at a price considerably below the MX700. All three models have the automatic document feeder that I want.

I believe, but am not certain, the MX series is a newer generation that was designed to supersede the MP series. The MP560 doesn't appear to be compatible with Windows Vista, but the MX series does. It isn't an issue yet, since I have Windows XP, but if I get a new computer in the next couple of years it will likely have Vista. The Pixma MX310's smaller size would work better on my desk.

Being inherently lazy, I probably won't refill my own cartridges, but will use remanufactured/recycled or generic pre-filled cartridges. I DON'T want cartridges that contain the print heads, and I think the Canon Pixmas don't, as far as I can tell.

Any advice? Thanks much.

I have a Canon MP830. It has all the features you want and appears to outperform the models you listed. I see Microcenter has it for $250 but there is a $50 rebate until 3/16/08, so the total price is $200 plus tax. The MP830 does have Vista drivers/software available - http://software.canon-europe.com/products/0010326.asp for the European page or http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/c...keycode=vistadr&fcategoryid=238&modelid=12804 for the USA page.

You can find CD Trays on eBay and instructions for a simple process to turn the printer into a CD/DVD disc printer at http://pixma.ulmb.com/?p=105. I don't see the MP700 but if it can print on CD's then the directions will show up sooner or later. This modification process only applies to people in the USA since elsewhere the printer comes ready to print on media right out of the box. Blame it on patents and Canon's stubbornness to pay royalties for their American sold machines!

The performance and the price on the MX700 seem nice especially considering your major use will be scanning/copying/printing black text. I recommend reading the posts at http://www.nifty-stuff.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=2497. Make sure to read all of them as Websnail modifies his opinion somewhat.

Good luck with your choice!

Remember the MP830 has a better quality CCD scanner. The cheaper and less quality CIS scannerd can be found in the MX700 and cheaper MFC's. The difference is clearly seen.......

I did a review of the MX700 some months back having bought one for testing purposes.

Given the spec/requirement you have in mind it does sound perfect for your needs so I could highly recommend it... I definitely wouldn't recommend any of the lower spec models because the cartridges aren't single tank, but tri-colour jobs which are inherently wasteful.

My review as pretty damning in places but as you've said, speed isn't so much of an issue and it seems to do what you want so my failings may not be such deal breakers for you. Hope that helps.
