I decided on a whim to get one of these 3D scanners, because I was curious how they worked and were they any good, plus it was going very cheaply in a two-day sale, so I was able to get my answer.

I found the setup and use of the scanner reasonably easy and there it ended, because when you make a scan it saves it as a PLY file format, and the extra steps I had to make to get an Application just to display the image.

I then had to convert it into something that I could use and the whole process for me was just not worth it, I can use PNG’s or my camera photos to get quicker results that were better with little or no trouble.

So, the practicality of me using a scanner are out of the question, because I just don’t have the knowledge or experience get any better results than I’m getting now, but they probably will meet somebody else’s requirements far better than mine...

Interesting! What's the model # / name of the scanner? I'm curious to look it up and see if there are videos on it.

To prove a point to myself, I needed a spacer to go behind the latch on my front gate, so I took a Pic of the latch on the gate, put the photo into Illustrator and drew the outlined of the latch, then pasted the drawing into Photoshop and inverted the image and then saved it as a PNG.
Gate Lock.png This the PNG I put into SCAD..

It turned out much better and faster than the Feckin 3D scanner I had, it’s surprising how things can be manipulated just as easy if you just put your mind to it, here’s my finished print and it fits like a glove.

    The scanner hit the bin...

Good job! Yeah, a little ingenuity can create some great shortcuts and/or solutions!
