Help. Brother j6940dw, LC402 cartridge INK TYPE, dye or pigment ?

Tks for keeping us updated; it's an aggrevating approach by the printer manufacturers to make refill pretty much impossible or to find out which method still may work.

I was looking at the original ink of the LC402 cartridge and the yellow color when it is together seems to be pigmented?

because if it were dye ink it should be darker and darker, since being translucent it gets darker and darker
Maybe?

You are right, that's exactly how a pigment ink looks like

To continue with the investigation I leave a proof that leaves the inks in water soaked for 12 hours, as can be seen if they were from DYE they should have washed or run the ink

And they have remained the same before, during, and after the water

Que tal veo que eres de mexico y tambien estoy con la misma duda si colocarle la misma tinta 5001 a ese equipo, por que quiero pasar de la 4500 a ese. pudiste realizarlo?

I can see that there is conflicting information. Here is a link to the ink composition for those ink cartridges and you model is included in the list. If you check the PDF of each of the inks the black has carbon black (or pigment) in is composition and the others do not have pigment components:

Digging into Brother’s own material changes the confidence level somewhat.

For the LC402 family used in the MFC-J6940DW, Brother’s SDS database explicitly assigns four formulation documents:

  • Black: BHK249
  • Cyan: BHC249
  • Magenta: BHM249
  • Yellow: BHY249
Brother’s SDS page explicitly lists the MFC-J6940DW among the models covered by those four formulations. sds.brother.co.jp

The strongest finding is black. Brother’s BHK249 SDS identifies Carbon Black, CAS 1333-86-4, at 5–9% by weight. That is unambiguous: LC402 black is a pigment ink, not a black dye ink.

and here is the link: Brother's Link on Ink composition

Go figure
