After many years using third part inks on various Epson printers, I recently purchased a new ET-8550, it fits my needs perfectly. My question concerns updating the firmware, after working so hard to avoid installing an update, for fear of third party inks being locked out, the 8550 is telling me that I should update firmware. Are there any reasons with this printer that I need to avoid firmware updates?

It is totally safe to update firmware on eco-tank printers: no chips on the bottles whatsoever, you can even put distilled water in the printer and it will print (without anythink visible on your paper though).

Thanks for the reply, I assumed as much though assumptions have gotten me into hot water more than once. Good to know that I can proceed with the update.

My printer is nagging me to update the firmware, but I cannot find any release notes. The printer is working fine now, but 1. the messages are annoying, 2. if there *is* an improvement, i.e. usability, compatibility, bugs, that would be nice.

Anyone have experience with the latest firmware? Anything to report?

There should be some software 'Epson Software Updater' installed on your (Windows) computer which you start, and where you can deactivate automatic updates - it's a pretty clear software , it does not just updates the driver and/or firmware but as well other preinter related software like OCR or manuals.
You can start the software updater as well from within the driver - on the maintenance tab. It is generic software which can handle all Epson printers on your computer.
I don't see a problem to let the updater do its job, there are no restrictions changing in regards to the use of bottled inks - OEM or refill or pigment or whatever.
