I wonder if it is a software problem, caused by the driver or software becoming corrupted. So did you install other software or update Windows before the error happened? Even Microsoft has caused printer problems with a faulty update.

Maybe uninstalling the driver and software and reinstalling it could solve the problem? This trick sometimes works. If you have got another computer you could also try installing the driver and software on that.
That's an interesting thought that I hadn't considered. I might try printing from my (not internet connected) laptop which used to print correctly and certainly hasn't had any changes as a simple test.

Lastly, if you can turn off bidirectional printing on that printer that might help as well. Here is link to the PDF manual for your printer: https://files.support.epson.com/docid/cpd5/cpd56653.pdf
Interestingly, this has improved the quality of printing onto plain paper, but has not made a difference when printing onto discs, unfortauntely.

I tried printing from a non-internet connected laptop which has not had any updates in the past decade, and has previously printed successfully, but it printed the same way as the 'up to date' desktop.

I hate to say this after everyone's valuable research and suggestions here, but I think I've given up on printing to disc from the Epson printer for the time being - mostly because I bought the Canon iP7260 to do the printing I needed to complete urgently, and found its results to be better than the Epson when it was in its prime. I might revisit the problem in the future, but I thank everyone for your help with this.

I'm new to this forum, but it seems to be a genuinely supportive community. Your help and suggestions have been much appreciated. I hope I'll be able to return the favour at some point.
