A couple of items,
- Under unusual situations, ink or other contaminants between the round gold contact points can cause problems.
- Also, if the pads are no longer gold (gold coating), a good solid electrical connection becomes much less certain, as when the gold is gone, the underlying metal...
Your problem is above my pay grade to help much more, and I will leave it to those with more expertise.
It did seem odd that the banding appeared to extend beyond the large magenta patch.
One thing I did not hear mentioned is checking for a good connection without contamination (crosstalk...
Did you notiice that the banding is not limited to just the square magenta area? White areas amplified in picture below show bands there and continuing across the magenta square area. Might be a clue.

Hi @ThrillaMozilla
To solve you particular problem, it might have been better to start a new thread as it might get buried here.
That said, sounds very frustrating and yes with the right settings and profile you should not have that level of a problem.
Since you are likely a expert on this...
Hi @pharmacist
I don't know if you have already checked the Chromix site yet it shows the i1 Pro ruler which you seek and it mentions to contact their sales department.
No clue about availability at this point as it does not say on the web page.
Thought it was at least worth mentioning...
Hi @pharmacist
I am familiar with that setup as I do have one.
Here is link to a detailed review by Keith Cooper:

And here is a link to the replacement fixture for the new ruler from B&H...
Wow, what archeological dig did that come from? ;) I did not even know that Gretag MacBeth partnered with other companies to have names such as HP imprinted on their hardware. I bought an i1 Pro 1 rev B back in 2005, and I recognize all of that hardware in your pictures.
Support lasted...
Hi @Ink stained Fingers
It will be great to see your results.
One thing that might be worth checking in your tests is the difference between the standard and the highest quality setting. The difference may not kick in until the highest quality level is chosen. We could DM if you want...
Thank you for the pointer to the specific information on why Keith believes both blacks are being used.
I noted Keith's statement:
So, even though Keith was unsure about this, I can understand why all the information he gathered points to that.
If true, I suspect that it is worth checking other...
Hi @Ink stained Fingers Good questions. I had not noticed much attention paid to the VFA paper. I'm not an expert yet when comparing three sample sets, which included Epson and Hahnemühle sample packs. I had five test images for all the papers and had a set of non-expert people judge them...
Yes, that would be absurd, and I did not use the words you quoted: "not as intended" and instead suggested that full characterization is needed and YMMV. Case in point, Keith found that using ABW in the FVA mode was worse (blocked up shadows and worse Dmax), and Jose saw that for his color...
Thanks for you thoughts @Ink stained Fingers
The only thing shown in the video is his ABW comparison tables where he showed the L values at maximum density. Not sure it is the same as Dmax yet the VFA measurement was L=14.75 and for the Matte it was L=12.57 I circled the crunched shadows he...
Thanks for the link @pharmacist
I am not quite sure how Keith Cooper determined that both the dye black and pigment black inks were used in the VFA media setting, but while curious, this is somewhat immaterial.
When characterizing a paper with a particular media setting, printer, and ink set...
