Doesn't WicReset, among other features, have a print count utility? And - is it safe to use? A few years ago I think I read it was risky in some way. Maybe it was another utility with a similar name I'm confusing it with.

Just on this point, the source is Eastern Europe (ie: 2manuals) so it's something that has frequently been queried. We've been a reseller for the WICReset keys for some time so you can imagine we have a reasonably good communication link with the developers. We use the utility ourselves but it never hurts to verify and we recently did a scan on a recent version which you can check here

As to the gear grinding trauma... I'm more than happy to send you one of the many T-shirts I have for that particular experience, heck it's almost a rite of passage on here

It's really only a concern if you find it is still doing it after a switch off/on as the printer should re-calibrate itself after a power cycle (the slow movement you saw). Usually repeated grinding issues are down to either:
- Foreign object remains in path of printhead
- Disconnect (or occlusion) of sensor on back of printhead
- serious soiling on the timing strip at back of printhead

Very helpful to know other folks have had this happen and lived to tell the tale. And yes, I did get the super slow head transport, in both directions.

If I may drift a bit, I'm not real sure how that alignment utility is supposed to work. It went through its procedure about five times before I quit. It didn't look like there was going to be an end to it. Was I being impatient? Yeah, I suppose I was! And the squares are very small, hard to discern the one with no or fewest bands. I'll try again.

(Before I go any further... how do folks here underline a user's name and place the @ in front of it? And does it have some special meaning? I'm still pretty new here!)

Re: pixelphoto's post: I didn't describe fully my setup... instead of a damp sponge, I use what's called a "water pillow". Can't remember where I read about this, but it's available at tobacco shops... you put it in your tobacco humidor to keep it fresh! Only $2. I placed that on the paper tray, and actually I bought a dust cover to fit the printer. Found it on Amazon for about $15, comes in different sizes. I was reasoning it would help to retain any moisture emanating from the water pillow. And her sticker on the printer is a marvelous idea!

As for leaving the printer on... I've read many sides to that question, and opted for turning it off. You get a "mini-headcleaning" when it powers up, and ink cost is minimal since I refill my own carts. I print in b/w and five of the six carts are very dilute, mostly a clear base fluid - cheap!

Sign me up for one of those T-Shirts... I've gotta have one! Just kidding, I don't need another t-shirt... but that's a great idea! "Rite of Passage" ... wonderful! Do I qualify?

Can you send me a link to where I can get that utility? It seems to be available at many suppliers, but I like your idea of being in touch with the developer. I use Avast for a virus program and it scans new installs.

OK, Paul the idea of this "@ " in front of the name of a member your replying to is, they will normally receive mail to tell them you have responded to them or their post.

So if I put @Paul W., you should receive mail that someone has pinged you and when you use it in a reply, it gets put up on the forum with an underline if you have done it correctly.

There are two ways of contacting @websnail, one is by PM on here and the other is by his website Email: support@octoinkjet.co.uk for any questions you might have.

Let me expand on @The Hat's answer a bit.

There are 4 ways to communicate directly to another forum member. Each of these will notify the other forum member you have posted something directly to them. I do not receive email notifications of this but see I have a response from someone when I log onto the forum as noted under the heading "Alert" in the top right of the page next to "Inbox" above my avatar.

The first two methods are to click on either "Quote" or "Reply" at the bottom right side of the other person's post you wish to comment on. This will incorporate all or some, respectively, of that person's post. You can also perform the same to functions by using your mouse cursor and left mouse button to highlight text in that person's post. When you let go of your left mouse button it brings up the two choices to either Quote or Reply. Choosing either will incorporate the desired text into a new post from you and alert the other person.

The third way is to use "@" in the body of your post. Just type "@" (without quotes) and when you have typed at least 3 characters that are the beginning of the other forum member's name it will pop up a small window with all members whose name begins with those first three characters. Choose the member from that list or continue to type more of the person's name, or all of it if you like, to narrow the search. The member will be notified you have posted something at them.

The fourth way is to private message them. This function is called a "Conversation" and can be accessed through the "Inbox" heading I mention before above your avatar on the top right of your screen next to "Alerts". You can include one of more people to message with privately. These do not show up on the forum for everyone to read.

Maybe there are other ways. Let us know! We can all learn from each other.

PS -- If you click on The Hat's "Location" in his avatar (Wicklow, Ireland) it will take you to Google maps and there is a picture of his bungalow.
