I normally wouldn’t have posted most of these photos, but Rob asked me to show my setup. I apologize in advance that these shots were taken with my P&S in poor lighting and several of them are poorly focused. I also added a few shots dealing with getting a good print that aren’t necessarily related to refilling.

This shot shows how a sealed (top fill) refill hole. Note that this printer (i9900) doesn’t have a clearance problem so the screw can extend above the top of the cart. Yes, most people use some sort of removable plug, but this technique had been used for years and it works well for me. Because the hole is formed by driving the screw directly into the cart wall without a pilot hole, there is a tight seal around the threads and it doesn’t leak, even without an O-ring or driving the taper into the cart. By not having to tighten the screw, the hole is never stripped.


Storage container for 2 oz squeeze bottles and 4 oz bulk ink bottles.


Rubber bottle stopper used to seal the blunt needle. The stopper is drilled and then carefully cleaned to form a tight fitting hole that keeps the needle’s tip clean.



Refilled PM and PC carts. The PM cart was allowed to go empty, while the PC cart still had ink in the ink chamber when it was removed from the printer – note the mottled appearance on the bottom sponge of the PM cart, indicating air in the sponge. Every cart is tested for ink flow after refilling, and this PM cart showed marginal flow – it should work OK, but it will have a small “factor of safety”. This is noted on the cart by adding a small piece of white paper on top so that it can be pulled from the refill rotation after it empties to be purged and dried.


Stock of purged and dried carts of each color kept in reserve.


Remainder of 500 empty carts purchased on e-bay.

Bulk ink supply.


One of 4 spare i9900 printers held in reserve. These older printers with BCI-6 carts are perfect for refilling. The others have all been tested and had their purge units tested and flushed. Two have good print heads that have been flushed and two had bad print heads that have been removed.


3 “new-in-box” spare print heads and 4 failed print heads with their documentation on the failure mode.


Supply of Costco paper that was on sale when they switched paper suppliers.


OEM carts saved for “testing” – they haven’t been touched for years. The carts in the bottom container are all still sealed in plastic – these came with one of the used printers.


I1 spectro for generating printer profiles and Spyder 3 for monitor calibration.


Books on Photoshop, color management, etc. It takes a lot of reading and studying to get good prints.


Why we do all of this.... to make prints like these...

Here’s what I have to put up with while trying to do some work.

I got him from the dog pound and he likes to sleep upside down, I called him Wool,

He’s is really a big lamb..

Not to mention ideal colour and texture to mop up ink stain/spills before your wife sees them!

Good one Roy, but all my disasters usually end up hitting me and not the dogs plus I got a No Entry sign on the door.

Come on Roy how about you showing us some of your photo nasty’s or even a few good ones, time is getting short..
