I'm trying to get under it with paper towel to absorb cleaning solution I'll be pushing through the system. I found a suggestion for a similar model of holding the cancel button but that didnt work. Any ideas? I know printers move the printhead our of their seats but I don't know why and how to invoke this.

You power up the printer, and as soon as the printhead starts moving you pull the power cord, and you can slide the printhead easily along the rail.

Did not work for me. I powered printer on but printhead stayed in place. I did not hear it moving or doing anything.

What I did was opening the full cover while setting it on a plastic part that holds it while it is open. Then I pushed in the button in the right side that signals the printed that full cover is closed. While holding it pushed, I instructed printer to start cleaning cycle. Once the printhead moved I plugged off power cable and could move it freely.
