Hi guys!

So, this beasty of my, has a new issue: It refuses to print out anything bigger than A3.

According to the description it should be capable to print at least on Arch B size 473x305mm or 305x1000mm with the side feeder according the driver popup window.
The print job is sent from the computer and it arrives to the printer (it appears on the printing job listing on the printer’s display, see the picture) but then nothing happens, it hangs up, no error message.

First I thought it just needs more time but I left it turned on even for a whole day and still nothing.
I tried to set different paper sizes – A3 wide, custom 457x305, even random paper sizes.
I use a Lenovo Y580 with dual booting 64bit Windows 7 and 8.1. I tried to print in each of these OS versions – no difference.
I use the same driver in each windows because this is the only version which actually worked so far.
I guess the driver is a legacy-driver named as KONICA MINOLTA Universal PCL5 from UPDPCL5Winx64_29011MU.zip found on net.

Any ideas?

Probably I just seeing the 1000mm option since I using a generic driver rather than the one specific to your model, but it does not print on 457x305 either.
I tried the driver from the official site too. It didn’t work on W 7 and 8.1.
I also tried to install the basic printer installation .INF files manually.
I have the Arch B paper in the Tray 1 and according to the service manual the Tray 1 should handle that size too.

I also put some Arch B in to the bypass tray - same results.

It doesn’t matter what is the original size of the printable PDF. It can be A4, A3, Arch B, whatever. It prints out as far as in the driver popup window the Paper Size is set to A3 or smaller, but as soon as I set it to 305x457 it hangs up.

The only discrepancy that I can see is your original size is clashing with your paper size, its marked as Custom Size, but should there not be a specific size entered there also..

This mismatch is where your troubles are starting from.

Actually that drop down menu for Paper Size which you marked is the option where I set the 305x457 size paper, so it is set to 305x457 but it just keeps named it as Custom Size.

This is an old used/refurbished printer which I got 1-2 years ago. They took it out of order because it developed a printing issue, which we managed to resolve. I paid for it 20 euros :D

I actually don’t know if this issue was present from the beginning, the first owner never mentioned it (I guess they used it just with A4 and A3). It was in use since 2004 I think.

It was a half year ago when I first tried to print on “atypical” paper size with the same results.
As I know back then this model was released for Windows XP, for 32bit mainly.
Since I have it, I always used on W 8.1, 7 64bit OS on the same laptop. Once I tried to run it on a HP Pavilion Dv5 1199ec with W 7 32bit but no driver worked.

I tried about 15 different drivers or driver packages so far, including the driver on the original installation CD.

I fiddle with the drivers a little more.

It works!

It was a driver problem after all. But the solution is kind a… counterintuitive.
As I said I tried a lot of drivers before. If the driver was an installation executable I ran it as administrator, if it was just the driver file package with the .INF file I tried it by adding a network printer and browsing for the .INF file.

The trick was that FIRST I had to install a universal driver package/utility, THEN add a different New Driver .INF driver in the C350’s Printer Properties Advanced section.

I tried to add this .INF file before manually but got some error message.

It is very strange that people have to do some kind of workarounds to resolve this kind of issues.

The next step will be to force it to print on 1 meter long paper :p

A generic driver may cover a lot of functions but not every function. These are for last resort.

What didn't work? Installation of the driver or ability to do the custom setting you want?

You stated the Service Manual says the printer tray can accept Arch B and 305x457 paper size. Maybe so, but the printer's User Manual does not state Arch B or 305x457 as compatible sized papers.

Read Chapters 6 and 7. If you find the custom size is available then post where in the User Manual.

Yes, it seems you are right. The universal driver handled the common prints but not the atypicals.

The installation went well, even printed on the 305x457 paper. The problem was it printed out a load of baloney. See the picture. Well, the name of the printers which the driver contained was suspicious either - Fiery X3e 22C-KM PS v2.0

:barnie:he:th

With the proper user manual I see the max size A3 Wide is supported.

This looks like some sort of administrative report. I can see your name "Le Wins" at the top of the print out. Not sure what it is or how you ended up printing it. Wrong selections, wrong driver, malfuntioning machine???

Besides the orientation of the printing on the page being wrong (check setting portrait/landscape), there are a number of other issues including missing text that looks like "Ghosting" and creases in the paper. It seems there are controls for zoom and placement of text/image? you can manipulate with the printer controls that may contribute to the ugly print out. Your printer is a beast and there may be multiple ways to get into trouble.

Fiery X3e 22C-KM PS v2.0
What did your search of the User Manual or Google say about it?

At this point, recommend you shelve the A3 Wide printing for now and focus on getting a proper standard sized print without issues. May be best to set everything back to Default and go from there.

Yes, it is. I am not sure either, but I got this kind of error reports 2 years before, back when I bought this unit and the first time tried to find some working drivers. For me it tells that the actual driver is not compatible, it’s looks like the printer unit and the driver do not speak the same language.

The printer „choked on” the paper and stuck during this particular test print, so the print was never finished, that is the reason of the bad print quality. Otherwise it prints nicely.

Your printer is a beast and there may be multiple ways to get into trouble.
Tell me about it :D Most of the less annoying problems I have are mechanical problems. The unit is pretty old and worn out. Sometimes I get some misfeeds, most of the cases because the take up rollers and at the side feeder.

Just like in this last case when I tried out the official driver again (with the Fiery X3e 22C-KM PS v2.0). The other factor which contributed to the misfeed this time is the fact that my 305x457 is a much smoother 100g/m2 paper and the printer was set to the classic 80g/m2.

What did your search of the User Manual or Google say about it?
Most of the cases it pops up as an printing workflow optimization, automation… service… software… thingy… for less sophisticated older printers… I guess. I am not sure. Here is the brochure.
This particular driver is a part of this Fiery “supervisor” system, I guess. Anyway, it doesn't interest me much. It doesn’t works so I discarded it.

At this point, recommend you shelve the A3 Wide printing for now and focus on getting a proper standard sized print without issues. May be best to set everything back to Default and go from there.
Yep, I already restored the basic settings. The only thing I keep is the driver which works better.

Thanks.
