I've had an Epson Artisan 837 for many years. I was cleaning the timing strip and managed to loose the tension spring inside the printer.

I'm looking for a replacement printer. I really like being able to label CD/DVDs directly. I'm also pretty attached to my CISS. Can any of the current model Epson printers do both? I was looking at the XP-830 but Epson made it pretty clear they were doing everything possible to force people to use Epson ink. Is this any different for the new printers than the warnings I got for the 837? I haven't been able to find a ciss for the XP-830.

You may have a look to the Epson L805 - which is a photo printer supporting CD/DVD print and comes with the Epson permanent CISS. Epson bottled inks are priced such that you won't need to look elsewhere anymore.

I've been doing a bit of checking. It appears the L805 is not sold in the US market. Is there a US equivalent?

How is it with low volume? I don't do a lot of printing. My main reason for the ciss was that when I used cartridges in the 837 I was constantly replacing almost full cartridges that had dried up.

It isn't a deal breaker but I had a canon at work for a while. I have to say I didn't really like the separate tray for the cd. this looks like it's the same kind of thing.

What would you call 'low volume ' - one page a day ? The printing frequency is more relevant than the overall volume. I'm not familiar with the U.S. market but have heard that there are gray imports of such models which are not officially available by Epson U.S. There is a XP-55 which is basically the L805 just running on cartridges.

Sorry for the delayed response. My posts still need to be approved.

My volume is a bit less than you mentioned. I might print 50 pages and a half dozen CDs/DVDs one weekend. Then leave it sitting for 3 weeks. My wife may print a few pages a week. That's pretty sporadic too. If someone had a driver option to print a test page if nothing has been printer in the last day, that would be a major selling point. Maybe I can find an app.

I did find a US voltage L805 on ebay. The ET-7700 and ET-7750 look like they have similar specifications. There appear to be a bunch of new epson tank printers just announced. I wonder if any of those would be worth waiting for.

Edit: Some good news.
a. Apparently I'm able to post without delay now.
b. I managed to shake the spring out of my 837. If I can figure out which way it went in I may not need to rush into a new printer now.

The L805 is a photo printer only, the ET7700/7750 are combo units with a scanner, duplex printing and an additional pigment ink for text print. You need to consider the printer type/configuration you think you really need.
How often are you connecting your smartphone to a charger ? Inkjet printers don't like to idle for longer periods, you can plan to print a photo at least every week, but you probably won't stick to such a schedule, rather do a small image print every morning/evening when you connect to the internet whatever, just make it part of regular activities.
You'll read reports of users that their Epson/Canon... printer started without problems after weeks or months of idle time , and there may be some differences between models, but there is no guarantee for all of that . I can't tell you how long my L805 could idle - I'm just printing too much.

My 837 is back in one piece!

It still doesn't work properly but it is back in one piece.

That's a bit melodramatic. It has the same problem it had before I cleaned it. Black isn't printing correctly. Text is all blurred, and black areas of images are white. There was an old film photography technique called solarization (sp?). Prints look a lot like that. Doing a nozzle cleaning seemed to make it worse. I bought a printer potty some time ago but never installed it. I'll do that this morning.

I'm sorry for any confusion. The Artisan 837 is an all in one. Scanning, Full duplex, and large format. All those features are nice to have. I was considering an all in one Laser. With the inkjet just for printing disks. I killed the last laser I had trying to print photo paper. The paper said it was for use in laser printers. It worked a few times then a sheet melted to the rollers. Unfortunately using a laser too would mean even less printing to go through the inkjet.

I used to be a professional photographer. These days I mostly do vacation photography. Most of that never makes it off my hard disk. For viewing I make up slide shows on DVDs. That's the main reason I have an inkjet printer.

Whether I get a new printer, or fix the one I have I'm going to have to deal with low volume. If no one makes an app to exercise the printer I'll probable have to do it myself. Just printing a test page once or twice a week shouldn't be much of an issue to automate.

One last question. With the Tiny volume I have would refillable cartridges be just as good as a CISS, or ink tank printer? I believe the Epson cartridges I was using were just getting clogged with dry ink. If I make sure to print something a couple of times a week would cartridges work?

You get a great level of convenience with the inktank/Ecotank-printers, no installation hazzles, the printer does not stop anymore in the middle of a page with an empty cartridge, no cleaning cycles triggered by cartridge changes; I'm very happy with various of these ecotank printers. You may find out a print frequency for your situation - you start every day and step down to every other day or every 3rd day....and may end up with a once a week cycle

The only problem I have with the ecoTank system is that, there are very few options if I want to get direct CD/DVD printing.
