From the weasel word in the patent they write the decreasing ink estimate to the eeprom, among other data. This is needed if cart is removed and replaced in the same or another machine. But the memory will not accept an increasing value-acts like a ratchet-or screw.

Can't find any Canon patents but these guys constantly cross license.
That's part of the P800 scheme. I saw this over a year ago, when the ARCs stopped resetting and the behavior of testing ARCs showed. It will accept a lower ink value but it will not accept an increased value once it has seen the last reading and serial.

Third party 'single use only' chips for certain cartridge models have been reported on this forum. Are they 'single use only' because no one has made a chip resetter, or, is the one time use peculiar to the chip itself, ie cannot be reset ever?

These chips are produced in large quantities for shops who sell prefilled cartridges.

For us refillers IMO it is the same (for Canon printers as long as it lasts).

You only would buy "single use" or "one time" chips when there is no chip resetter.
When they show empty you either need a new one, or - if the printer permits without revenge - you have to disable ink monitoring.
In this case you could as well continue with the OEM chip.
Auto reset chips is the other option.

OTH a resetter can reset most third party chips.
No reason to use ARC's.

Yes, but if only the Refillers' would accept the limitations of the current ARC chips and not try to out think them, they work and there’re far better than one-time chips or having to disable the ink monitoring, Arc’s were never made available for the Pro 1.:(

@palombian - my point was if Epson is concerned about chip resetting then why not use One Time Only chips instead of EEPROM chips. Maybe I misunderstood that Epson already uses a One Time Only chip.

Look at the patent. It is for a one-time chip since it will not allow resetting to a higher level. It still need to execute the serial protocol and read and write data. They just lie about the reason for not allowing higher values to be written. "Accidental" indeed.

Look at the patent.
I did and it was not helpful to me as I am not fluent in the language needed.

I searched on "accidental" and other forms, and "ink counter" and "counter" and these were also not helpful. "Accidental" or any form of such does not result in a search hit. No wonder you put it in quotations.

Please identify the passage in the patent where I can read what you are referring?

It is for a one-time chip
I get that now. There have been chip resetters for Epson printers but this particular chip model is not capable of resetting from what you are saying.

Yes.

The patent is for epson but canon probably does something similar for models with non-resettable chips.

From the patent:
"According to the memory device in accordance With this first aspect of the present invention, in the event that the value of Write data is greater than the data value of the usage history information data currently stored in the usage history data information storage area, Writing of the Write data to the usage history data information storage area in the memory array is executed by the Write module, thereby making it possible to improve the reliability of data relating to usage history in a semiconductor memory device, While also permitting data relating to usage history to be updated or reWritten. As a result, unintended reWriting of data relating to usage history can be avoided."

Don't feel bad about command of English. Patent talk is not English but legalese

Anyway, the patent may be useful for attacking one-use chip vendors. But it also shows a scheme to prevent resetting.

From the patent:
Thanks. I was able to read the passageway in the original text.

Don't feel bad about command of English.
I walked into that one. Yes, I understood the "legalese". The first clause of the run-on first sentence is an example of much of what should never occur in a sentence and was the specific reason I never finished the sentence when scanning the file previously. In the immortal words of Sweet Brown: Ain't nobody got time for that.

I saw that many compatible cartridges sold on Amazon adopt this kind of chip, easily recognizable by shape, color and W3, V1 characters.

Considering that they have received thousand of user feedback, almost all of which are positive, it can be assumed with reasonable certainty that they work well and are reliable.

Does anyone have direct experience?

One time use chips are fine for disposable carts. But they end up being about 1/2 to 1/3 the cost of OEM with questionable ink sources.
