Using Japanese cartridges in my Epson R800

I just returned from Japan, where I bought a set of 8 cartridges for my R800. Original Epson cartridges for about half the price I pay in The Netherlands. The Japanese model numbers are different from the European/American, but I'm sure I found the right cartridges. They fit without a problem. However I get the "cannot recognise cartridge" message, and the printer doesn't work. Is there a work around to get these Japanese original Epson cartridges to work in my R800?
