Hi folks,

I'm now shopping an economic all-in-on InkJet printer, including printing and scanner, (faxing being optional) preferrable Cannon. There are many of them available on computer shop. It won't be easy for me to decide. I only print and scan occasionally, heavy duty being NOT a MUST. The printer shall be used on Windows machine as well as Linux machine.

Suggestion and comment would be appreciated. TIA

Are you planning on using it as part of a network (ie: shared between more than one machine?)

No, not for network sharing. For desktop computer only. Thanks

In that case I'd probably opt for an MP510 or something similar.. even a reconditioned/refurb MP500 would be good.

It handles scanning, printing, uses single ink tanks (no tri-colour [3 in 1] cartridges) so you don't waste tons of ink and reasonably reliable.

Thanks for your advice.

I suppose you are referring to;
Cannnon PIXMA MP510

What did you mean "uses single ink tanks (no tri-colour [3 in 1] cartridges)"? Whether single colour ink tank is available?

About Driver;

Windows driver will come with the printer. For Linux PC I have to search for it. Dislike HP which has full support to Linux. Anyhow Linux folks can sort out the problem.

Correct..

There are two types of cartridges generally...

Tri-colour: where three colours (ie: cyan, magenta, yellow) are all included in a single cartridge. The cartridge is considered "empty" when one of the colours runs out so you tend to waste a lot.

Single Ink: where each colour ink has it's own individual cartridge so when the cartridge runs out you just replace that cartridge and not waste any of the others.

I'm afraid I don't know a heck of a lot about linux drivers but you're likely to have problems there with the scanner functionality. Printing is usually possible but only when someone gets bothered enough to write the driver.

As to HP drivers, I take your point about disliking them but I have to say I've slowly warmed to some of them. You might want to consider whether the L7580 or even the L7480 would be a better bet. The consumables are a lot more cost effective and price wise the L7480 is comparable with the MP510. Support may well be better but I'd ask around before you make the choice.

Best of luck with it.
