This could be a sign of things to come.

How does this fit in the refilling world. Here's how, the Dodd Frank act or something like that requires the ability to have other consumables available. In Europe there is some similar law that has mfrs allowing printers to be refilled or again something like that.

jtoolman asked about the ability to sell re manufactured carts. Remans from China are illegal.

Well there is one side issue related to this. If cartridges that were captured or recycled out of the market were to be resold in the USA market, I am told it is illegal and customs can seize these goods. The provision is that if the cartridges were sold and recycled in a given specific market that is OK.

So what's the gist of this? Expect to see more moves by mfrs to prevent the manufacture and sale of new ready to be used cartridges. Expect much tougher encryption to prevent the manufacture of compatible chips. Expect to see more remanufactured cartridges WITHOUT the capabilities of ink levels, color match issues and the like. They don't mind having the remanufactured cartridges because each remanufactured one ORIGINATES from Canon etc they get at least the initial sale. They DO mind the G&G knockoffs etc., where there is nothing for them. So in effect refilling will always be around but the things in packages on the shelves that many got used to..the new comptible. Well..we shall see.

Do expect the probability of a resetter to diminish if not already then maybe down the road. The technology to do so has existed and its cost is dropping sharply...witness the stored value smart card model. These devices have existed for over a decade and a half over two technically.. It's just a matter of getting processing cost and silicon down. It might have reached there now actually. Breaking smart cards is easy you say...not a good cheap one. Have a try, take a go at it. You have to have resources a-plenty to attempt it. Most compatible mfrs don't have those technical resources. And with a modern one, the odds are against the party trying to crack.

I can smell it but we can keep the fingers crossed.
