Hello Forum Experts!

My trusty Lexmark X4270 has died. Please join me in mourning it's passing, but celebrating it's long life and until this week, unfailing service.

I'd appreciate any suggestions for an inkjet that could do the following for me: print ~30-40 pages of black ink text documents weekly, print an occasional color document like a PowerPoint deck (school projects for the kids) and most of all, will allow me to refill the cartridges myself. I don't need an all-in-one, just a printer. I'd also like to stay south of $100.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for your wisdom and support during my time of need. :)

That's the spirit. Clever wording.

I was thinking of recommending the printer that ghwellsjr recommended to me, a Canon PIXMA iP4500. However, it sounds like our situations are different ... I'm almost all photo prints and very few text documents (and I use an old HP 1320 duplex laser-jet for those).

Something to consider if it fits ... get a b/w laser and perhaps you can pay for materials to use an inkjet at work. Or a walk-up office place like Kinkos, OfficeMax on those occasions when you want to make colored prints. $0.39 each? For an occasional 4x6", its hard to compete with loss leaders at Walgreens, Sams, Costco, Walmart, etc.

And there are advantages to tracking down a used, local inkjet on CraigsList. Base on what I've read on this forum, the no-longer available entry level CLI-8 based inkjets from Canon are very desirable for a refiller, especially for mostly photo printing.

My 2 worth ... consider the source.
