Hi,
I want to avoid using my good photo printer for B&W documents.
A canon ip1700 sells for $47.00, but uses expensive "photo" cartridges.
Does anyone know if cheap black ink cartridges are available and would fit into the ip1700?
Thanks

I note that the 1700 uses 40/41 carts.

SOLUTION 1
If it were me wanting your requirements what I would do is this:-
Buy the Machine , Use till the color cart runs out , clean out sponges , refill with black ink in all 3 chambers, refill the Black cart when that becomes empty also.

SOLUTION 2
On the MP 150 there is a choice (in Maintenance) of whether you run with only the Black cart, or the Black and Color,or the Color only, I presume it may be the same for the 1700. But you will be paying full price for your Carts unless you can buy re-filled, I think they are a bit thin on the ground.

SOLUTION 3
A combination of 1 and 2. Refill with black ink in both carts but switch them on and off as required. Will prolong the life of each head.

Refilling the 40/41, 50/51 carts is covered in a recent thread in the refill section of this Forum, Solution 1 is the cheapest method. Solution 2 and 3 , Canon cautions that the print quality will not be quite as good when using "solo" carts , but if its for everyday text, its no matter.
