one of your correspondents reccommended unplugging the canon 1850 whilst the carriage was in the refill position so that it could then be moved so as to facilitate cleaning.
I tried it but when I went back to start after cleaning it, it threw up an error message, to whit, one green followed by 7 oranges flashes.
When the lid is up I get flashing green but as soon as I put the lid down the error signal appears.
Canon i850 HELP says I need a canon technician! Not worth the price of the printer of course.
any suggestions gratefully received.

You had some water behind the electronic contact sircuit board that was causing some minor shorts. The 7 flashes mean "defective print head" . Normally when it dries out it will function properly again.
