I have both these printers and using OEM ink I can find no difference in the
print quality between these machines. If anything the IP4000 seems to print
slightly better in my view but the difference is too close to call.

Leaving aside printing speeds I'm beginning to wonder if there is any
difference in the inks used for these machines, e.g. has anyone tried
refilling the IP4500 with IP4000 generic ink or vice versa?

IMO the IP4000 still reigns supreme and the IP4500 seems to be a similar
printer with the added disadvantage of chipped cartridges. The higher OEM
cartridge prices of the IP4500 are probably due to the chip.

BTW if anyone has a IP4200-IP4500 I would recommend downloading Ink Monitor.
This software will let you know when your cartridges are running low.

Well, by leaving out the print speeds you're pretty much going the route of the Monty Python "What have the romans done for us" sketch.

The print speed is quite a large part of the difference but having gone from iP4000 to 4200, to 4300 and recently gotten a 4500 (and knackered the printhead too I might add! :|) I'm actually more impressed with the 4300 than the 4500 which seems to have taken a step back and gone for a more photo based system. They could easily have designated it the 5500 which would have made more sense but they didn't, instead deciding all Canon higher end Pixma users are after a photo printer and not a general printer that does photos too..

Weird but there you go...
