I have 2 Canon A3+ printers that I use for photo printing - a Pro 10S using pigment ink and that I feed with Octoinkjet ink (very pleased with this option), and a Pixma iP8700 series dye ink printer that I feed with OEM ink. This query concerns the iP8700 series printer.

I am well placed with supplies of new OEM cartridges for the iP8700, as these are often available from private sellers who have disposed of their printer. However the "value-packs" that I have purchased rarely include the OEM grey ink. I have a resettable grey ink cartridge that I intended to refill with grey Rihac ink (a well regarded Australian ink supplier), but note that Canon supplies a grey dye based ink in 70ml bottles (GI63-GY) for the Pixma G660. Would this be a suitable refill option for the ink used in the CLI-651 cartridges (I think these may be designated CLI-551 in other parts of the world) or is it likely to be a different chemistry or colour density?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts ...

Both Canon inks are the same, so it will work in your printer, but it may be a slightly different shade of grey.. one of the other 39 shades..:gig

So just to be clear (and notwithstanding sadomasochistic crossreferences ;)) am I clear in understanding that the two inks are the same inclusive of their shades of grey? Or will I need to run new profiles?

Most likely new profiles .. But do a test print first to see if your happy with the new inks.. :)
Thanks. I'll print a test page when I try the bottle ink and will report back here then. I only intend using the bottle grey since I have about a dozen each of the other ink colours as OEM cartridges. If the bottle grey is significantly different from the cartridge grey, I may use Rihac's grey ink for now which is supposed to match the original pretty closely. Reprofiling half a dozen or more papers would be a bit of a chore for the sake of only one ink colour change.
