Hello there,

we have Canon 4700 and 4850 printers which we have just started to refil the cartridges ourselves. We are using gti ink 4 dye colours (inc black) + the black pigment ink for the large cartridge.

we (so far) have succesfully refilled the colours and thin black and are getting good prints. However we have refilled approx 4-5 black 525 cartridges and when printing they give poor results.

Specifically when priniting a word or excel doc the text is not sharp, faint and lines in excel are wavy!

We are using the german refil method (drill small hole near lug / ink exit hole to printer, syringe through foam all the way into main chamber and slowly fill with ink whilst cartridge is upside down. We are putting in approx 18ml ink until some comes out the cartridge to printer hole - top air hole is not covered during process should it be?

Is this method not so good for the big cartridges would it be better drilling a top hole in the main chamber? Any help much appreciated. :/

Your refilling method couldnt be better but its a pity I couldnt say the same about your choice of inks however.
The pigment ink that you use is probably a dye based ink and not pigment at all.
I would strongly suggest you get good quality ink for your printer and start again.
There are numerous threads on here where youll get the best recommendation for good quality ink from just do a search its easy ok..:)

It's a little hard to tell because of your typos, but I think you said you fill until the ink comes out of the air vent hole on the top of the cartridge. This is not good and may be the reason why you are having this problem. If you do get ink in the air vent serpentine path going along the top of the printer, you need to clean this out so that air can flow.

First blow into the air vent and make sure ink comes out of the outlet port (this will be messy as you will also get ink out of the refill hole unless you plug it up). Then seal up the outlet port and the refill hole with tape. Turn the cartridge upside down and place it on a flat surface that can tolerate ink. Squeeze the sides of the cartridge to try to remove more ink from the air path. Repeat as long as you get any ink. Then blow into the air vent again to make sure there is a free air path into the cartridge.

It would be a good idea to seal the air vent hole when refilling to help avoid this problem.

Good luck and let us know what happens.
