My Brother MFC-J5830DW is complaining about the ink absorber being full. What should I do to fix this?

I found a little more info about the printer.

Here is a service manual. I haven't read the manual in details but just skimmed it. I noticed pages 3-95 Ink absorber, 3-119 Maintenance unit, 3-105 Flushing base and 3-128 Flushing box.

It seems you have to enter a maintenance mode to reset the ink counter and a special Maintenance printer Driver is also needed. I searched for this driver but found nothing.

But it seems there are other ways of resetting the counter, See this, this and this.

Hello there:)
when the print absorber on your brother mfc-J5830DW indicates that it is full. The internal ink absorber counter of the printer can first be changed, yet this is only for a short time and may result in ink overflowing. The ink absorber sheets need to be cleaned and replaced for a lasting fix. In general; this calls for opening the printer, which can be difficult.

When your Brother MFC-J5830DW printer reports that the ink absorber is full, it means the internal pad designed to absorb excess ink during printing and cleaning cycles is reaching its capacity. Here’s how you can address and fix this issue:

1. Understand the Ink Absorber

The ink absorber (also known as the waste ink pad) collects excess ink that is cleaned from the print heads. Over time, it can become full and trigger a warning to prevent ink spillage.

2. Check the Printer’s Manual

  1. Refer to the Manual: Consult the user manual for specific instructions related to the ink absorber. The manual may provide guidance on how to proceed when this warning appears.

3. Reset the Ink Absorber Counter

  1. Reset Counter (Temporary Solution):Sometimes, you can reset the ink absorber counter to clear the error temporarily. Here’s how:
    • Turn Off the Printer: Power off your printer and unplug it.
    • Enter Maintenance Mode: Plug the printer back in while holding down the “Resume” or “Go” button (the button might vary by model). Keep holding it until the printer’s display shows a message or enters maintenance mode.
    • Follow Instructions: Use the control panel to navigate to the “Ink Absorber” reset option (specific steps can vary, so refer to the manual or online guides for precise instructions).
    • Confirm Reset: Follow the prompts to reset the counter. This will clear the error message temporarily but does not address the full ink absorber.

4. Replace or Clean the Ink Absorber

  1. Professional Service Needed: Replacing or cleaning the ink absorber pad typically requires professional service. Contact Brother customer support or an authorized service center to have the ink absorber replaced or cleaned. Attempting this yourself can be messy and may void your warranty.
  2. Service Instructions: If you decide to replace the ink absorber yourself, ensure you follow specific instructions provided by Brother or detailed in the service manual. This usually involves:
    • Opening the Printer: Accessing the internal compartments where the ink absorber is located.
    • Removing the Old Pad: Carefully remove the old ink absorber pad.
    • Installing the New Pad: Insert the new ink absorber pad.
    • Resetting the Counter: Follow the reset steps as described earlier to update the printer’s status.

5. Preventive Measures

  1. Regular Maintenance: Regularly clean your printer and perform maintenance tasks as recommended to minimize excess ink buildup.
  2. Monitor Ink Usage: Keep an eye on ink levels and cleaning cycles to avoid excessive use that can fill the ink absorber more quickly.

6. Consult Professional Help

  1. Contact Brother Support: If you are unsure about performing any of the steps or prefer not to handle the issue yourself, contact Brother customer support for professional assistance. They can guide you through the process or arrange for service.
By addressing the ink absorber issue promptly, you can prevent potential damage to your printer and ensure it continues to operate smoothly.
