Some of these suggestions may not apply specifically to you, but many might still find them useful when the occasion comes around.

First decide which printer you want and why, remember buy cheap pay twice.

The initial outlay costs should not be your biggest concern when purchasing your new printer.

Do you need archival prints or just something that will look good for a few years.

There are lots of bells and whistles to think about too, so do you your homework first.

Will it be for colour photo use and or general dogsbody stuff like documents.

Do you plan to use OEM inks, or would you prefer a cheaper option due the cost.

If you intend to refill, then pick a model that will make the task as easy as possible.

How much space do you have for the new printer, will it fit, is size/area a big factor.

Owning an inkjet printer will cost you regardless whether you use it or not.

If you only print occasionally, then inkjets are not for you, please consider purchasing a laser...
