I believe that when you get a low ink warning, you can just press ok and the printer will work. the down side of this is you could damage your color nozzles, most likely burning them out. However if you are only printing b/w documents it may be an option, as the mx870 overall is a nice machine...
I have not had any luck with my mx870 in service mode, and no manuals are available free that I know of. The capacity is the same on all of the color carts, the black pigment used for b/w documents is larger. I leave my printer on 24/7 in an effort to minimize maintainance cycles, as every time...
I don't quite follow how you figure 14.7 psi. You would be applying a vacuum to the filter basically, and vacuum can be a very powerful force. A vessel may hold 150 psi but will crumple like a tin can under vacuum. Are you thinking if to much vacuum is applied it would suck down air thru the...
Against better advice I also tried this method, with good results :plbb . BUT it was with a print head under warranty? and I had another good print head I had gotteh for free so I really had nothing to lose. One addition I added was a piece of 3/8 i.d x 1/2 o.d. for the pigment screen, and was...

Canon direct USA, $71.99 refurbished w/ free shipping. I really think I will order another as a spare :D
Question: What is your method to clean the print head? Please go into detail.
I am new to this also so I am far from an expert and I don't think the Hat will approve but I ran the print head under warm water, Soaked in a shallow tray of windex and also used a print head pump as described here...
This seems to be a reoccuring problem from some other recent posts and my own experience yesterday. With a new mp560 (same print head and carts) with one refill on the oem carts I had a larger photo print session so I refilled some of my virgin empty carts for the job. On the 1st print problems...
Don't forget the gray  . Bulk ink is available for the mp990 in a set of 6, pgblk, b,c,m,y,gray. Depending on your location may determine who you get your supplies from, just get the good stuff:)
I just bought a second "set" of ink...total $70 (O_O).
I think I would return those carts and order another printer. today they went down to $71.99 w/shipping. You would get a set of carts and a spare printer for the same cost :)
You will need a resetter and they are available :) They are available from several sources, I got mine from Amazon, currently they are $9.99 w/shipping.
The older 221's are readily available if you look around, curently you can get a set of 30 including the gray for $50.00 w/shipping on ebay, at $1.50 apiece not a bad deal and enough to last for years...
Interesting article in Wired Magazine. http://www.wired.com/magazine/2011/04/st_whatsinside_inkjet/
Water
The ink in inkjet cartridges can be as much as 95 percent superpure deionized water. Yet at more than $3 per milliliter, it would be cheaper to print your vacation pics with Dom Perignon...
I like the mp560 alot, it came with the older 221's. It's basically the same as the mx870 being they have the same printhead but without the document feeder it is smaller ( the mx870 is BIG ). Either one is a good choice but I think the mp560 is going to my daughter, I am really tempted by the...
I would go with the Canon mp990 refurb. It's a nice printer with easily refillable carts and actually uses the same print head as the 6120 and 8120 so it should be pretty fast. The new 225/226 carts can be refilled, but not easily and a resetter is not avaliable yet and will probable be...
