Before I purchase the compact mp230 to replace my gigantic mx870 I'd like an opinion please from anyone who has/had one? The replacement ink costs more then the printer and I wonder if these cartridges can be filled with generic ink?
Thanks for your replies to both my questions - seems like I now have 2 dead printers; gigantic machines taking up my bed while I travel Australia.
So.... my best idea to solve the problem is to remove all ink cartridges, dump the machines and purchase a new printer @ AU$28 from a chain-store...
How to remove ink from dead mx870?
I can't figure it out - the carriage/printhead is locked and won't move without power. Any suggestions please, or is a big hammer the only way? JohnEltin

And it worked for me too on a MX870 - thanks. I've been working on it all day and your easy solution(via the 100th Google search) saved me - AND saved the printer too which I got from a friend who'd just forked about $300 for a new one and gave me this to dispose of because he could not fix...
Problem solved!
Unplug the printer, take the dog for a walk, plug in and try again!
I guess it needed a bit longer than the the 'unplug for 15 seconds' as the manual advised.

I bought a second ip4600 as a backup and have been trying to set it up with my CIS Rihac system that works fine in the old printer that now has a broken CD tray.
After spending days unplugging and restarting, (reommended in the manual) and removing and replacing the cartridges several times...
