A look at the G550 (and print for the G650/620 et al.)

YMMV - I've not been remotely inclined to use a PC in over 20 years ;-) That and the Mac issue with this little printer is the first Mac related printing issue I've faced in 12+ years of detailed printer testing. So, much as when I'm asked to recommend a printer, the answer is 'it depends' ;-)

A look at the G550 (and print for the G650/620 et al.)

it is a profile on a profile, but not what is commonly called 'double profiling' which is problematic.

A look at the G550 (and print for the G650/620 et al.)

Quite deliberately Not my intention The whole point is that whether colour management is on or off in the airprint setup is completely irrelevant If it makes it easier, think of my profile as just a fancy adjustment curve, which photoshop is applying when I select the profile. I'm using...

A look at the G550 (and print for the G650/620 et al.)

Yes, I should add a caveat to my efforts in that I'm not using new kit or software to do this - My Mac still runs 10.14 Hopefully there are off switches on the new black boxes, but I wouldn't count on it.

It's an interesting response, and as a result I'll be adding a longer clarification in the main written review. I can see that I might be assuming too deep an understanding of what a profile is, and what it can do. Yes, it's the inability to fine tune or update them that I dislike about videos...

A look at the G550 (and print for the G650/620 et al.)

OK, let me expand it further... ;-) Think of the Mac airprint+printer system as a black box - actually it's a black box with some controls on it (media/quality) You feed image data into it and a print is made. I decide I don't like the way it is converting my data into an image. I send it a...

A look at the G550 (and print for the G650/620 et al.)

A profile describes the performance of a printer/ink/paper (OK, it's a transform to/from PCS to a printer space) Whether that is via a driver with 'no colour management' or the black box that is airprint is neither here nor there. It's an ICC profile either way, just not created with the...

A look at the G550 (and print for the G650/620 et al.)

AirPrint is Apple technology - Canon using it shields them from Apple moving the colour management and driver code goalposts as Apple bring out newer systems. Whilst I am disappointed with Canon's choice, I think using the term 'Fiasco' for AirPrint is a somewhat loaded term for what is...

A look at the G550 (and print for the G650/620 et al.)

Yes - I virtually never watch videos if I can help it, but someone at Canon pointed out that we are in a minority :-( Visible difference - no not really That's probably not quite true - if you print an image with lots of red/orange/purple gradients and compare with an even cheaper printer...

A look at the G550 (and print for the G650/620 et al.)

For a win pc you use ICC profiles exactly as you would any other printer. PC users, move along there is nothing to see here ;-) For Mac though, the airprint driver has no way of turning off colour management which is what you'd use when printing profiling targets and also for using the...

A look at the G550 (and print for the G650/620 et al.)

I've just published a look at printing with the G550 https://www.northlight-images.co.uk/canon-g550-printer-review/ It's very much aimed at seeing what I could get from this little printer despite the lack of driver and forced use of the AirPrint driver on the Mac I've produced loads of...

    A look at the ET-8550

Nor me actually ;-) Most of the 'real' review is done, but I'm stuck for a bit with web site stuff - there is just me working on it...

    A look at the ET-8550

First up an apology that this is only video - the Northlight Images site has some serious issues that mean I can't write up the full review until I've moved to a new server - I'd normally do the video to complement the written review (with the detailed stuff) Oh, and a warning that it's 46...

    PRO-200 review info

Less steel girders - not as obviously as Epson have done with the 700/900 It still feels very solid, but I've not taken any of the printers apart. That would be my sofa - hers is across the room ;-) The prints usually end up reappearing up in my office...

    PRO-200 review info

no idea really - I don't have any profiles from when I tested the pro-100 several years ago. Personally, my best reasons to ditch a 100 are its paper/margin limits and usability - of all printers I've tested in the last 10 years it's the one I disliked the most ;-) That made my 200 testing much...

    PRO-200 review info

I've now finished my main PRO-200 review http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/canon-pro-200-printer-review/ and made a video to go with it. I've still got the PRO-200 and 300 here if anyone has any questions I might have missed in the review? I've a few more articles and videos to go with...

    Starting with PRO-200

Too late - it went into the printer a few moments after I took the photo :-)

    Starting with PRO-200

I've started testing the PRO-200 for a review and remebered how interested people were with the 300 and the print head serial/part numbers ;-) This is the PRO-200 head The full review is unlikely until after Christmas, but any specific questions, just let me know?

    A look at the P900

OK, since I get asked a lot, I've broken my normal habit of never doing comparative reviews ;-) A shorter (8m30s) look at the P900 vs. P700 https://youtu.be/-8Un8lqjwuE Shouldn't be a surprise to anyone who knows my like of large prints ;-)

    A look at the P900

I wish - I only started doing them properly in August for the PRO-300. YT might eventually pay a small amount, but I'm not expecting it to fund more than the odd lens cap ;-)
