Hello,
One of my visitors came up with the idea to calculate the ink costs per gallon for several cartridges to give my visitors more information (and shock the people who are still using OEM cartridges). You can see the results at http://www.printeradvice.com/refill.html .
For the...
You're probably right, tests are (mostly) based on 5% coverage but not yet on ISO norms.
There was an interesting thing at the Epson site about the ink topic:
"Epson uses internal test standards for inkjet yield testing because there are not yet any
international or common industry standards...
Hey Websnail,
You're right! The problem is the cash: I don't have cash to pay for the printer tests and only few people are willing to make a donation for these tests, so in the short term it's simply not possible for me. In the long term I am thinking about using the profits from the Google...
That's true! The companies have changed their strategies: in the past they earned money with selling printers. After a while they knew more about consumers and understoond that consumers were looking for quality for a low price. To decide what the quality is, they read reviews and ask sales...
At www.printeradvice.com there's a print cost calculator (and also a cost calculator for photo printing), you can use this calculator to calculate the print costs for more than 40 printers!
Hello everybody,
I updated my site! I changed the lay-out, but also added a lot of information about inkjet and laser printers. You can still use the printing cost calculator, but also find much more interesting info, printer reviews and printer drivers!

You could use my site ( www.printeradvice.com )for an indication of the printer and printing costs for 40 of the most popular printers!
Hello Inkjetter,
At my website you can easily find reviews for some of the printers you mentioned. There ou can also calculate your printing costs to decide what printer is the best for your situation.
That's not true, the amount of ink used to print a page varies for each printer (e.g. HP tested several printers with the same ink cartridges and the print capacity differences were quite big. In this example the same cartridge is used with a different printer from the same manufacturer. If you...
My calculator gives ink costs for OEM ink cartridges (Lexmark/Epson/HP/Canon original inks). Ink prices and printer prices are prices from manufacturers price lists for the United States. By the way, my calculator is recently updated, so you can check the result. If you don't agree with the...
Dear visitors,
One of the visitors of my site (www.printeradvice.com) asked me what data I use for my printer cost calculator. I told him I use official manufacturer data, because it's impossible for me to test 40 printers. First, ofcourse I don't have 40 printers and second, I can't afford 40...
Hello LTR,
I don't have experience with the 4200 or the 5200 but I can help you with another aspect of buying a printer: I added the 4200 and 5200 to my site, so you can calculate the costs of printing (and, though both printers use the same cartridges, the cost difference in photo printing is...
New update:
Someone at this forum couldn't choose between the Canon iP 4200 and the 5200, so I updated my database. You can now also calculate the costs of the 4200 and 5200!
Hello,
www.printeradvice.com is updated. Now you can not only calculate the costs of printing with a specific printer, and compare them with other printers, but you can also see how much a printer costs in the shop, how much depreciation costs you and most important: SEE HOW MUCH THE INK WILL...
Hello Grandad,
I think this is where it did go wrong: Coverage with water does not assure 100% coverage when using ink. Ink probably has other properties then water. There's a difference in density. I think this is the main reason.
I hope this is a proper answer to your question.
Hi Rob,
I didn't know you based your costs on 4x6. Then the new ink costs you stated after my first comment are a nice average. The variance is quite big for different Canon printers, but it is a nice average though I think when using it as an average it should be slightly higher.
You're...
18 cent per print? That means you base your calculations on 15% coverage. I still think the result is not correct. Printing a full color top quality photo requires almost 100 % coverage. I think your results are too optimistic. Besides, you have used data for a specific canon printer. I give you...
$ 0.06 per print? For printing a full color print? I don't think so. I think you base these calculations on manufacturer data (because some of the canon printers do have a capacity of 750 pages for the color pages). But this capacity is bases on 5% coverage per page!!! Print a full color top...
