Congrats, Roy!

Based on lots of observations from the wet darkroom to the present dry light room, satin has more gloss than matte. By quite a bit. In fact, Canon calls their one paper Semi-Gloss, but on the back in the multi-language descriptions it's called Satin. Pearl, which Ilford came up with many...

I wasn't addressing cost because it didn't matter for my inquiry. And there is a huge range of paper costs, starting with where one lives. I'd rather think that a person spending a relative lot of money on a large, pro printer isn't going to make a paper decision on cost. Here in the US...

Remember back in the day of film, the popular photo magazines would have “Shoot outs” for a film category, like high speed slide? They would magnify little portions, examine the colors, pontificate, etc. OK, so I’ve made a dozen or more identical test prints with the papers I have, including...

Amen, bro.

Hmmm....none of my Canon dye printers - the only kind I own - awake with a print job. All hard wired via USB. No biggee, I just get the warning that the printer is offline. And then I have to spend untold amounts of energy to...to...to....push the On button.

Why I so settle for cables....rat's nests accepted. One less thing to bang my head for.

Yes, I've heard of those printer models that have zero clearance above the carts. None of my printers fall into that dastardly category! For us freebirds, the hot glue works perfectly.

The bottom line is that there is a hell of a lot of paper - and many other consumer items - out there that are in the distribution pipeline after changes are made in packaging or product. As I mentioned in another thread, Amazon has the PT-101 paper available for $17.45, A3+, 10 sheets...

Oh, damn. And here I am a lover of history and Democrat. Thanks for the wedgie..... It sounded right.

OP, just now buying the Platinum Pro paper, product # PT-101 (Same number as JFK's famous boat!) It appears that the red packaging is the original, and the black is the new one. Probably to differentiate it from all the mundane Canon papers still in red.

I, too, dread re-inserting those little plugs, tabbed, even. And my fingers are probably not into the "sausage" category, either. And so easy to inadvertently launch............... Before I discovered plugs, I had great success sealing the hole with a hot glue gun. Not as pretty, not as...

Sir, with all due respect, you aren't making sense. 1. Again, the paper and the ink never touch each other in a layered paper. 2. It is you, who posit this theory about paper acidity, who needs to offer up some evidence. I have said I'm willing to learn something. It is not up to me to...

OK, do you have evidence that this is a problem, especially with respected, quality papers? I'm always willing to learn something. I just can't imagine that with all the money spent on making such papers that they would overlook the pH of the ink receiving layer, if it was a problem. Cheap...

Adorama in NYC often has great paper deals and good shipping rates. A lot of the Canon papers are steeply discounted right now, and if the order totals $49 or more, free expedited shipping. So, I got a 50 pack of 13"x19" Pro Luster for $37.90, and a 20 count, same size Glossy II for $14.99...

Way too unlikely to be an issue, ever, on any photo paper. This whole thing of "archival" and "acid free" is, for the most part, just marketing and something that you are told to worry about. In the real world? Not so much. Just this morning I was going through a number of old images, ca...

There is no ink to paper contact except on the cheapest papers. These are what the paper trade calls "coated," usually an ultra-fine clay which allows much finer detail. These paper types are everything from card stock to brochure types of papers. "Real" photo papers usually have the paper...

Yes to, and for the reasons given, the first two Canon papers. My third one now is Canon cheap matte, I mentioned elsewhere I got boxes of 50 for $4.50 each. Just got four delivered today, woo hoo. Great for knockabout, "Everyday" day printing with excellent detail. I think way too much has...

Excellent points that I hadn't processed. Thanks. I don't think that a high price and more profit would justify selling it to pigment ink users unless it worked. Meaning, at the least, maybe not dye ink quality, but lack of problems like puddling. As you pointed out, it's probably a waste...

Gas fading was why swellable polymer papers were the right choice for dye inks. Oh, wait, not so many years ago, they were the ONLY photo papers available! The ink would penetrate the gel molecules, making it a more complex molecule for the ozone, etc. to work on. That's my understanding...
