Harmful to what? The environment? Counters? Windows? I'm guessing you didn't mean printer heads/nozzles.

Well, many cleaners have very different ingredients. I don't want to risk using something that might damage the printer. And in many case, they don't list/won't tell you the ingredients of the product.

Okay, thanks. I ordere some ink and hopefully it will work once I get it. I guess I was just trying to say that not all colour printers are like that. My two ancient Canons never need colour ink to print black.

The Epson support rep. said I need to replace all cartridges before testing printing in black only. I'm wary about buying a whole bunch of cartridges, even cheap ones, and possibly finding out the printer doesn't work or just needed the nozzles cleaned.

Have you done any simple continuity tests from end of plug to power cable exit to power supply terminals? Maybe the problem is as simple as a faulty power cord, bad power switch or contact. Use a DMM. These are super easy things to test. And before you try stripping down solder joints, I'd...
