I give up! I never said a rash of failures, it has happened in the past to me and others. It was just a suggestion to the OP that he may just have a bad print head. Two new cartridges and a print head and capping station cleaning would have solved this in about an hour. You guys really drag...
True, but I have seen this pop up as a problem more than a few times. I just posted one link that I had bookmarked.
If the OP pulls the print head and cleans it properly, cleans the capping station, puts in two new OEM cartridges and still has the problem then I would say it's a bad printhead...

I had the problem where a new yellow cart was contaminated instantly 2 times in a row, cleaned the print head and parking sponges, was good for a few prints and then a contaminated yellow cart again. Replaced the print head and never thad...
This is a known problem of internal cracks with Canon print heads, I have had it happen, as others, the cartidges usually get comtaminated due to it.
Bottom line you most likely need a new print head.

I just received the following chip resetter that allows manually resetting the auto-resetting chips (ARC) that come on many R2880 refilliable cartridges that have a V6.0 on the chip.
Worked flawlessly on my current ARCs...
I'll try the power off/on a few times the next time I have the problem.
It's just strange though that all I did was remove a cart and replaced the same one right back and zero ink flow, even after a many cleaning cycles. It looks as if air is sucked into the head inlet port of air is sucked...
I'm having a big issue with with my fairly new R2880 printer with occasionally poor nozzle pattern skips.
