I have had an MP600 for just over a year now. It has worked flawlessly and if anything, is even more economical with ink than my previous IP4000.
I can throughly recomend it if you can still get one. I believe the MP601 is much the same but the MP602 has the smaller cartridges.
JohnM,
The pink viscous stuff you are refering to is 'Windolene'. From the smearing it leaves on windows, it also contains some form of oil!
They also make a much lighter liquid in the form of a spray - it also smears!
But your best option would be ammonia which you can get from hardware...
FYI: In view of what you said I was surprised to find that Hobbicolors do not advertise the part-pigment/part-dye ink. So I contacted them and they advised me that they no longer supply it.
Kathy,
In the days before I refilled I used to get Canon replacement carts from Choice Stationery. They were 'Think' carts and very good quality.
I see they also do HP. Here's the link

I use a Canon MP600 and Hobbicolors inks.
I use only Unicorn (Swiss make) from Lidl and Tesco's own glossy paper. Both are instant dry and I have had no problems at all with them.
In the UK, Lidl sells an excellent glossy paper, branded 'Unicorn' and made in Switzerland.
Tesco own brand is also quite good - glossy and matt.
All are 'instant dry' types.
Using the German method I have found that the sponge does not get 'supersaturated' like it does with the normal method of refilling, and there is enough room around the needle to vent out the air.
But that last top up needs to be done slowly.
I had that problem when I first used the German refilling mothod. When you turn the cart the right way up ink starts to flow into the sponge - quite a bit if the sponge is dry-ish.
The danger is that the chip thinks the cart is full - and it isn't. So you could be happily printing next time...
Hobbicolors UW8 inks for the CLI carts will work quite happily with the BC6 carts of th IP4000 printer.
Their PMT-BK ink is the same for the IP4000 and the MP610.
I've used those inks on my IP4000 and MP600.
I get my supplies from the States via ebay. They do a very good service.
Try the Canon Outlet on Ebay, here

They have one going on offer for the next 4 hours.
Their stock are refurbished, but you'll get excellent value - as new!
I have never used the ATMEL chip, but I suspect it is the same as other microcontrollers, ie. there is a security bit that can be set optionally to prevent the program being read.
