The cleaning usually is very ink consuming process, but you have to be aware that some compatible (remanufactured) ink tanks / inkjet cartridges contain much less ink than the OEM ones.

I'd buy red / green ink as well. There is a reason for the printer manufacturers to put 2 additional inkjet cartridges.

Personally I'd buy the HP inkjet printer. The inkjet cartridges would be easier to refill. But I already have a HP printer, that's why I'm prejudiced.

Would a nice printhead clean help if done before installing the compatible inkjet cartridges? I guess if there is no ink on in the printhead the 3d party ink wouldn't have anything to react with. Any truth in that statement?

When I don't know how to refill a given cartridge model, I prefer the low cost compatible cartridges as well.

Just refill a ml less. For example - OEM BCI-24KB contains 8 ml of ink, when refilling put only 7. At least that's what I do.

Yep, Epson are going after the Epson compatible inkjet cartridges' resellers for some time now.

Usually removing and putting back the whole system worked for me, but not on Pixma ix4000.

I overfilled once - got pretty messy. After that I usually put 1-2 ml of ink less than the cartridge's capacity.

Generally the compatibles are much cheaper than the OEMs no matter whether inkjet cartridges, laser toner cartridges or ribbons.
