Yes, I think both possibilities are worth considering...
On testing cartridges, Grandad35 in Post #16 this link writes...
About removing cartridges. When you remove a cartridge it is best to replace it with another cartridge, preferably of the same color so as not to contaminate the colors...
The "who" was Mikling. Mikling is the owner of precisioncolors.com mentioned below. I believe he said "can be" (not "are") the same thing. You might want to consider the following about ink supplier policies and the buyers ability to know what they are buying.

You are welcome.
Sorry, what I initially called "beige plastic strips" was a poor choice of words. I modified my initial post to call it "ribbon cable". I also added a link to some cleaning instructions.
If you don't have a service manual for your printer you might want to download the service...
ejaf, I googled and found another report of an IP8500 with a manual alignment problem in column K that sounds same/similar to what you describe -- see this thread.
Two ideas drawn from this thread, plus one that I added.
- assure latest driver and proper installation
- clean the mylar timing...
Here's two examples that might help. I couldn't find an ip8500 example, but i9900 uses the same print head as IP8500.
Nifty-Stuff i860 Nozzle Check and Extended Nozzle Check
Grandad i9900 Extended Nozzle Check
If you can scan it or take a picture of it with a digital camera, you can upload...
Two thoughts,
1) How does the 'Extended Nozzle Check' look? If you don't know how to perform this check, do a search on this phrase and your printer model. The sequence of buttons varies slightly between models, so be careful to get the procedure for your printer.
2) How does a purge8 test...
rdsmith, did you transfer the chip from the OEM yellow cart to new non-OEM yellow cart, etc? Below, is a post that explains the problem that arises if you do not transfer the chip to a like colored cart...

I'm not familiar with your Epson printer, but it sounds like you might want to try a technique described by fotofreek in post #5 this thread.
I wonder if Epson Double Sided Matte Paper would be strong enough?
But, sounds like it would be best to use actual water color paper as stated and...
Very interesting. It reminds me of two posts.
First, this post by ghwellsjr -- see post #2 this link.
Second, a post that I recall reading but try as I might, I have not been able to find it again. Perhaps you or someone else will remember this post and be able to provide a link to it.
It was...
mousemaster, welcome to the group. Thanks for posting your story. I love a good success story! It's good to know what works.
In another forum (this link) there is a tutorial on dismantling and cleaning IP3000, IP4000, IP5000 print heads. Sounds like same method you used. This tutorial includes...
Yes, it seems likely that the ip4000/ip6000 ribbon cable has more slack than i960 ribbon cable. There is a post on another forum (this link) regarding dismantling and cleaning ip3000/ip4000/ip5000 print heads, and I noticed that they don't grind down the nibs either.
I'm saving all of your...
Bummer! Does the printhead you took apart and cleaned work in the good printer? Or do you hesitate to try it?
It sounds like moosemaster (this thread) dismantled two print heads (IP4000/IP5000) in same way you did. As I understand it, he soaked the whole dismantled head in windex, whereas you...
beschizza, my i960's original printhead has a problem with the PC channel, the other colors look perfect on an extended nozzle test. With the PC channel, some (but not all) of the nozzles are clogged or stuff up with baked on gunk, I believe the later.
I tried all the common cleaning methods...
The IP4000 service manual is probably close enough to be useful here.
see post #21 this link
Another resource is the Canon online IP4300 FAQ, available in downloads library. If you can't find it do a search in this forum for Canon and FAQ, as I've posted it a few times.

beschizza, it sounds like you received a bad print head to me. Since you are able to get some printing with the old head but none with the new, that indicates to me that the problem is not clogged suction/purge tubes.
I recently received a new print head from the same place for for i960...
