So, fellow ranters, what is your take on the use of polarizing filters with color film? They did intensify the blues in the sky to bring out clouds, create the appearance of night shots when taken during the day, and they were very effective in changing the quality of reflections. Comments...
One of the major benefits of refilling over using non-oem prefilled carts is that there are refill inks available from known, reliable sources. You don't know the source of the prefilled cart ink. The companies in China that manufacture and prefill non-oem carts have been known to change ink...
Driving the Austrian Alps in a VW Bug in the dead of winter December 1960, Playing chicken with truck and bus drivers on the one lane roads in the mountains of Greece where buses on hairpin turns had wheels on the road but the body of the vehicle over thin air and deep ravines, Sharing the roads...
I've used ten year old OEM carts for refilling. I've not noticed deterioration, but when the ink feed slows down due to some dried ink in the cart flushing and drying can bring them back to working like new. Dye-based inks are water soluble and don't require any cleaner fluid. I have very...
You've got it right. The V550 does have a light in the lid. There is an insert that covers it when doing reflective scans. You remove the insert cover and use the film strip holders and software setting for transparency scans. Only difficult the first time, after which you will find the...
Good choice for the price on the scanner. Nearly the same specs as my old epson but includes ICE for dust reduction. Using ICE does slow down the process, but it may save more than enough time in post-scan processing. I like the lack of warm-up time as that is something of a nuisance. I don't...
To add to The Hat's advice, some people resent that the printer companies design the system to leave a small amount of ink in the sponge side when the cart shows empty, so they foolishly override the system to use the last little bit of ink. False savings as the print head can be damaged when...

Any decisions on an updated scanner for improved 35mm. scans?
I think you may have answered your own question. You really don't want the intake screen on the printhead to dry out. You may not have had any damage, but you will know when you refill the carts and do some printing. I'd run an additional cleaning cycle before printing anything.
Best to have...
I also have my own irreplaceable 35mm negs from 1958 up to the digital camera age. I agree that we need to get what we can from these images. In addition, I have family 35mm color negs and slides from an uncle (now deceased) that go back to the 1940's. The oldest ones really require an upgrade...
In addition, when one cart shows low (but has the reservoir empty or near empty) I top up any other cart that is up to 2/3 low in the reservoir. Less ink wasted in the long run as each cart refill or change triggers a cleaning cycle. In addition it extends the useful life for more of each...
Scanning and printing b/w 35 mm images is akin to stepping into quicksand. There is a lot to learn to get a fine print from a 35mm scan! Step back to film based photo shoots and darkroom days to see the variables from start to finish. First, the camera and lens with which the photo is shot...
I expect that the only service available is purchase of a new printhead. I've only taken one printhead apart. The surgery was successful but the patient died!
Limited series art prints should cost enough to cover the necessary archival inks. Plus, of course, the monstah Pro-1. Should also charge enough to cover the extensive desk real estate that the monstah occupies!!
No problem - the bank balance will survive and thrive.
Please stay in touch and let us know how your work is going with the new printer plus the VHP and potential customers' response. You've now moved from "student" to "teacher" status on our forum!
Unfortunately, "affordable-but-quality" may be an oxymoron. At the lower end comsumer grade all-in-one units there has to be a lot of manufacturing cost management to put together anything near a high quality printer, scanner, copier, fax unit. Consider that each one of these separate high...
There are a few pro 9000S on Craigs list in the SF Bay Area but I only saw one new in the box. If you see it make an offer. It has been on for at least a week. When there were lots of them due to the package deal wtih Canon cameras I bought one for$100 and passed up another for $125. You...
I assume that the labels will be outside the packages and will need to be waterproof. That leaves out dye-based inks. If you go to inkjets you will need to buy one that either uses all pigment based inks for full color printed labels or one of the printers (i know the Canon line) that has a...
Several companies make inkjet coated transparany materials. just google inkjet transparency and you can then check out the compatability with your printer - dye based or pigment based inks.
