Is this normal?
MessyParkPad.crop.small.IMG_4370.jpg
HP Photosmart Premium C309a all-in-one, page count 4400.

The area around the park pad is pretty dirty, with a lot of ink. Other areas inside the printer also have a thin film. There was even a thin film on the duplex unit at the back of the printer. The head positioning tape was quite black, and I think that was making the head slap against the left side of the printer sometimes. I cleaned what I could without disassembly, and that may have solved the clunking/slapping problem.

My CD still won't feed, but otherwise it prints perfectly.

I'll try to disassemble when I get a chance and clean it. Any words to the wise, or rather, from the wise?

That looks perfectly normal to me; in fact it’s cleaner than some of mine.

If you want to give the area a quick clean just fill a syringe with some Windex and spray it about liberally and then push a paper towel in on top of the purge pads to mop the mess up, you may have to do it a number of times to make a difference to the whole area.

Don’t for get to pull the power plug before you go sticking your hand in there.. o_O
Even HP 's bite..

Since today printers are made like disposable singe use items it makes one wonder how they work at all. It is common to give periodical maintenance like you said yourself to clean them from time to time.

Household Inkjet Printers were not designed to be "user maintained".

OK, thanks, guys. I still have a hunch that some optical sensor is blocked and causing a problem, but it's good to know that this much at least looks normal.

Sure I agree, but we are all experts here regarding printers, so we should threat our printers like their worth a million, older printer really are a bargain :)
