Canon CL41/CL51 cartridges dying unexpectedly (error code 5 in MP160)

I measured resistance and the pin on the left does not have any, so it's blown then.
The onther pin measures about 1.1MOhms.

I read it's recommended to coat the pins with solder to make better contact, because I had this problem too when you inset the cart the printer throws an error you re-insert it ant it works fine. Remove it and again you have to insert it numerous times to work. The contacts a clean, so where is the problem then???

The solder coating was very easy, let's see how it turns out. I coated PG-40 as I have a few and just try to make unclog them.

Here is my solder job for the pins and I also cut way the guards to be able to refill without removing the cartridges eliminating the problem altogether.

Nice soldering job! I wouldn't attempt this as I would expect the thin phenolic foil to be damaged by heat.

The solder points look nice and shiny, so did you use a good old 60/40% Sn/Pb solder?

Yes I used ASAHI rework solder that is 60/40% Sn/Pb, I don't use the ROHS solder as it is really crap. The temperature was 230 deg C. I used a flux and the flux also cools down the plastic so to speak :) It's really easy to do, might look complicated but it's not harder than to solder a resistor.

You just need a soldering station and a flat tip for soldering iron. Some contacts need to be scraped using sharp knife if they do not want to be coated with solder.
