WorkForce 30 new Epson cartridge not registering

My wife uses a WorkForce 30. Sometimes, she installs a new Epson black ink cartridge, and it does not seem to register. The ink level shows as Out, and the printer doesn't print. We don't want to toss out a perfectly fine new cartridge, but we can't print with it either. This has not yet happened with a color cartridge. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Have you tried removing all the cartridges, then press the ink button with an empty carriage and let the printer realize all the cartridges are out, then press the ink button again a few times to get it back into the ink replace position and put all the cartridges back. Sometimes that helps.

Thanks for the tip. I tried it, but that did not solve the problem.
