I haven't seen this addressed so here goes. My Epson 1400 sits facing me with the ink bottles on the left of the printer and works just fine but in looking at various sites dealing with setting this printer up with a CIS system I often see the bottles sitting on the right of the printer. Both ways seem to work well so my question is, is there a "best" way? The tubing looks like it's working freely either way! Thanks in advance for your answers! OutOFtheinkwell!

Epson, Canon, HP... A "few"
There's no real rule of thumb beyond "Does it work?"...

If the answer is yes then keep it where it is... The only critical things to watch out for are tube crimping, potential cutting or other damage or catching in a way that might jerk the printhead to a stop or cause other damage.

If you're not having any problems like that then you'd just be rearranging for the sake of it, and quite possibly introducing problems rather than avoiding them...

Just my 10 penneth worth.

Yes, It works like a charm, can't ask for more then that! Right now though, I'm using the new damper/chip combo set up and the dampers are easy to refill via a flip top refill hole. There is an O ring and the top seals well with just a little finger pressure! I do have to watch the levels because the Epson fill level picture is not working but a flashlight and keeping track of how many pictures I print is not that hard to do!

Given the money I've saved over the last 3 years with a refurbished Epson 1400 and the amount of prints we have done,( thousands) and are still doing on that same printer I know that I could have bought 50 or more printers for what I paid and still have money left over! Needless to say, I love CIS systems! I don't know how Epson feels about that but they should realize that over time I have bought 9 of their printers and that at least should make them happy! The day they make it impossible to install and use a CIS system in their printers is the day I stop printing with their equipment. I only hope they wake up.

I simply position the bottles behind my printer. But more important that the position is height. You actually want to position the bottles slightly lower than the printer if possible. I have my printer propped up on my scanner. I rarely scan anything other than calibration prints or the odd document so it sits under the printer raising it an inch or so. This will maintain a slight vacuum on the cartridges which the Epson printers prefer vs pressurizing them as they sometimes are apt to do especially when full which can have the disastrous effect of siphoning off your ink in a couple days time which gets absorbed in the waste ink pad or ends up contaminating other printheads with the wrong colors.

I also carefully route all the hoses so when the print carriage moves back and forth the hoses never rub on any parts in the printer. I even go as far as cutting plastic parts out of the printer to ensure hoses never rub on anything.
