I used this method for the first time today, and it was really easy and much cleaner and less error prone than my previous top filling episode. luckily for me I got the right length needles in my Redsetter package.

I think it is well worth it, since it keeps the ink level monitoring working (and in theory your warranty). It is a small price to pay for something that can save you from the expense of a clogged printhead, and it can save you time worrying about and manually checking ink levels.
I highly doubt data corruption would be an issue. EEPROM/FLASH chips only allow themselves to be re-programmed if the programming voltage is high enough. The programming voltage is usually significantly higher than the normal operating voltage for precisely this reason.
